John Tinkler was born in Trimdon on 24 August 1968. He signed professional forms for Hartlepool in December 1986 and made his debut as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat at Cambridge on 24 January 1987.

 

He made one further substitute appearances in 1986/87 before making his full debut the following season in a 3-1 FA Cup victory over York on 9 December 1987. Tinkler made 20 appearances in 1987/88 before scoring his first goals in 1988/89 when he netted 3 goals in 38 appearances. The first goal came in a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient on 17 September 1988.

 

Whilst preparing for the opening match against Lincoln for the start of the 1988/89, Hartlepool played a pre-season friendly against Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson was about to enter his second season with the club played a mixture of players but lost 6-0. Hartlepool was managed by former PNE player John Bird saw Kerry Dixon score an hat-trick with Tinkler scoring one of the other three goals. Chris Turner who later came a Hartlepool boss was in goal for United. 

 

Tinkler one missed one league match in 1989/90, scoring twice. Tinkler was part of the Fourth Division promotion side in 1990/91 when Pools finished third with Tinkler scoring twice in 26 appearances.

 

His final season with Hartlepool was in 1991/92 when he made 39 appearances. This season saw him have his best season in front of goal, when he scored four including two in two matches in November 1991.

 

His last match for Hartlepool was a 1-0 home victory over Bournemouth on 2 May 1992; he has scored 7 league goals in 170 appearances.

 

In July 1992 Tinkler joined Preston and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Deepdale against Bournemouth on 15 August. His first goal came in his second appearances as PNE beat Stoke 2-1 in the First Leg of the League Cup. Tinkler scored twice for Lilywhites in 24 league appearances, these were in a 2-0 victory over Burnley on 12 September and in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on 6 February 1993.

 

His last Preston appearance was as a substitute for Lee Cartwright in a 1-0 defeat at Stoke on 24 April.

 

In August 1993 Tinkler joined Walsall and made 6 appearances, his last was a 2-2 draw at home to Crewe on 11 September 1993
