Player Profile – Ian Bogie

Ian Bogie was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 6 December 1967. His football up bringing started like many at Wallsend Boys Club (other players include Peter Beardsley, Steve Bruce, Lee Clark and Alan Sherear to name just a few).

He was an apprentice at his home town club and made his football league debut in the old first division against Luton Town on 30 August 1986. The result was 0-0.

He was nicknamed 'the new Gazza' and was Paul Gascoigne's room mate at Newcastle.

Unfortunately his early promise did not materialise into the sort of ability demanded at the top after 14 appearances he was transferred to Preston in February 1989 in a swap deal with Gary Brazil.

Bogie made his Preston debut on 11 February 1989 at home to Bristol Rovers in a 1-1 draw and scored his first goal for Preston in April against Aldershot. Preston finished 6th in 1988/89 losing to Port Vale in their first play off semi-final. Port Vale won the final and was promoted to the Second Division.

Although Preston had Brian Mooney in midfield, they just avoided relegation the following season and shortly after an embarrassing FA Cup defeat against Whitley Bay Les Chapman replaced John McGrath as manager.

Ian Bogie's last game for Preston was in the final game of the 1990/91 season. After 79 appearances and 12 goals he transferred in August 1991 to Millwall for £145,000.

Bogie stayed for two seasons at Millwall making 51 appearances scoring 1 goal and was transferred to Leyton Orient for £110,000 in October 1993.

Bogie played 65 matches for Leyton Orient scoring 5 goals until he was transferred to Port Vale for £50,000 in March 1995.

Bogie stayed for 5 seasons at Port Vale and is famous for two goals. One was a 12 second goal against local rivals Stoke city and a late winner in the FA Cup against Everton. After 154 appearances scoring 9 goals he was released at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

Bogie made 21 appearances for Kiddrminster scoring 1 goal in 2000/1 season. After a move to Bedlington Terriers, Bogie is currently the assistant manager to Tony Lee at Gateshead.
