Player Profile – Alan Tarbuck

 

Alan Tarbuck was born in Liverpool on 10 October 1948. The winger started his career with Everton but didn’t make a first team appearance.

Tarbuck joined Crewe on 1 June 1967 and made his debut as a substitute in a 4-1 win at Exeter on 26 August 1967. Two days later he made his full debut in a 3-0 defeat at Stockport in the League Cup. His first goal came on his third league appearance in a 4-0 win over future club Chester on 6 September. On Boxing Day be scored both goals in a 2-2 draw against Doncaster which had culminated in 5 goals in 4 matches. Tarbuck scored 9 goals in 33 matches as Crewe finished fourth and promotion from Division Four.

The following season Tarbuck netted 7 goals in 38 matches but could not help Crewe avoid relegation back to Division Four.

At the start of the 1969/70 campaign Tarbuck scored on his first appearance of the season with a 2-0 win over Northampton on 9 August. His last goal for the club was in a 1-1 draw at home to Oldham on 20 September. His final appearance was a 1-0 win over Workington on 18 October 1969. Tarbuck had scored 18 league goals in 82 matches.

Tarbuck joined Chester and made his debut in a 1-0 win on 25 October against Colchester. Tarbuck scored both goals on his home debut against Exeter on 1 November. Two weeks later he scored another brace in a 3-3 draw at Halifax in the FA Cup.

Tarbuck was an ever-present in 1970/71 and had his best season in front of goal with 18 goals. His last match for Chester was on 11 September 1971 in a  0-0 draw against Barrow.  He had netted 24 goals in 69 matches.

He joined Preston and made his debut as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat at Norwich on 28 September. His next appearance on 23 October Tarbuck scored in a 2-2 draw against Birmingham. He then scored on his next two matches against Middlesbrough and Watford. Later in the season he scored on three consecutive matches for the second time.  He finished the season with 10 goals from 23 matches.

The 1971/72 season Tarbuck saw him score in his first home match of the season in a 1-0 win against Hull on 6 September. He netted 6 goals in 25 appearances, including a goal in his final match as PNE lost 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday on 3 March 1972.

Tarbuck joined Shrewsbury and his debut was in a 1-1 draw at Rochdale on 10 March. Six days later he scored on his home debut as the Shrews beat Bristol Rovers 4-2.

The 1973/74 season Shrewsbury was relegated to Division Four with Tarbuck scoring 7 goals in 41 appearances. The following season Shrewsbury were runners-up in Division Four with Tarbuck making 40 appearances with 5 goals.

Tarbuck made 124 appearances for Shrewsbury with 17 goals; his last appearance was on 24 April 1976 in a 3-2 defeat against Peterborough.

For the 1976/77 campaign Tarbuck joined Rochdale and scored one league goal in 48 matches.  The goal came on 1 November 1976 in a 2-2 draw against Darlington. His final match was a 0-0 draw at home to Aldershot on 1 May 1978
