Player Profile – George Stephenson

George Ternant Stephenson was born in New Delavel, Northumberland on 3 September 1900 and played in the inside-forward position.

He started his career with New Delavel Villa before joining Leeds City in 1919.  In November 1919 when Leeds City was expelled from the Football League all the players were put up for auction and at the Metropole Hotel in Leeds Stephenson was sold to Aston Villa for £250, joining his brother Clem.

Stephenson joined non-league Stourbridge on loan between August 1920 and March 1921. It wasn’t until the 1921/22 season before he made his Villa debut and made a total of 3 appearances during that season. His first goal came in the 1923/24 season and the following season he scored 5 goals from 14 appearances.

His most successful season for Villa was in 1926/27 when he netted 13 goals from 36 appearances.

After making 93 league appearances and 22 goals Stephenson joined Derby for a fee of £2,000 in November 1927 and made his debut in a 3-0 home defeat to Everton on 12 November 1927. He then scored 13 goals in his next 11 games, scoring 17 times in total from 28 league games; The 1927/28 season was his most successful in front of goal as the Rams finished fourth in Division One.

Stephenson also made two England appearances in 1928, scoring twice on his debut against France on 17 May 1928 in a 5-1 win in Paris which also saw Dixie Dean score a brace as well. His third and final appearances came against the same opposition on 14 May 1931.

Stephenson scored 11 goals from 32 appearances in 1928/29 and 14 goals from 31 appearances in 1929/30. Four of these goals in the 1929/30 came in one match in a 5-4 home win over Grimsby on 14 December 1929 as Derby finished runners-up to Sheffield Wednesday.

A further 11 goals in the 1930/31 season took his tally to 53 goals from 111 appearances before joining Sheffield Wednesday with Tommy Davidson during that season.

He only had one full season with the Owls scoring 12 goals in 1931/32 when after 39 appearances and 17 goals he joined Preston for the start of the 1933/34 season.

He made his Lilywhites debut on the opening day of the season with a 2-1 victory at Blackpool on 26 August 1933. Stephenson then scored 4 goals in his next 3 appearances; his first came in a 3-2 win at home to Burnley on 28 August and finishing with a brace in a 4-1 win at Burnley on 4 September. He scored two goals in a match on a further 3 appearances in victories over Swansea, Brentford and Hull. It was also the 5-0 victory over Hull on 9 December which saw the debut of a certain Bill Shankly. Stephenson also scored one hat-trick for the club in a 3-1 home win over Southampton on 23 December.

Stephenson stayed only for one season with Preston and finished top scorer with 16 goals from 25 appearances as PNE gained promotion to Division One after finishing runners-up to Grimsby. His last appearances for the club came in a FA Cup Sixth Round 1-0 defeat at home to Leicester on 3 March 1934.

Stephenson joined Third Division South side Charlton and scored 5 goals in the 1934/35 and 1935/36 seasons as Charlton won back to back promotions by winning the Third Division South title and in the following season finished runners-up to Manchester United.

On promotion to the First Division he made 11 appearances in 1936/37 as Charlton’s finished runners up to Manchester City. He had scored 12 goals from 50 appearances before hanging up his boots to join the coaching staff at Charlton.

He had a dabble in management when he joined Huddersfield on 1 August 1947 and took charge of 213 matches. He finished on the winning side on 63 occasions before leaving on 31 March 1952 as Huddersfield were heading for relegation to Division Two.

His son Bob also played for the Rams, making 11 appearances and scored one goal between 1961/62 and 1962/63. Bob also played cricket for Derbyshire and finished as club captain for Hampshire in 1979 and 1980.

George Stephenson passed away in Derby on 18 August 1971.
