Player Profile – Youl Mawene

Youl Mawene was born in Caen, France on 16 July 1979.

Mawene started his career at Lens, where he played an important part in side which was reached the semi-finals of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup and played in the 1-0 defeat at Arsenal in the first leg on 6 April 2000.

In the summer of 2000, Derby signed Mawene for £500,000. He spent the first half of the campaign in the reserves before making his debut in a 2-1 defeat on a frozen pitch on 30 December 2000 and went onto make a further 7 appearances during the season as the Rams finished fourth bottom in the Premier League.

The 2001/02 season saw Mawene score his only goal for the club in a 1-0 victory at home to Southampton on 17 November 2001. He made 17 appearances during the season as they finished second bottom and relegated from the Premier League.

Due to a cartilage operation he missed the whole of the 2002/03 season. On his return he suffered knee ligament damage but made his return to the first team in a 3-0 defeat at Preston on 1 November 2003. He became a regular in the side making 30 appearances as the Rams avoided relegation and finished twentieth, he also was voted the Player of the Year by the Derby fans. His last game was a 1-0 defeat at MK Dons on 5 April 2004 after 55 league appearances.

In the summer of 2004, at the end of his contract with Derby, Mawene moved to Preston on a free transfer. This was despite a bid from Championship rivals Wolves, for whom he had played three trial games during that summer.

Mawene made his Preston debut in a 2-1 home win over Watford on 7 August 2004; his first goal for the club came in a 1-0 win at Cardiff on 19 November. He was an ever-present in his debut season; he formed a strong partnership with Chris Lucketti as Preston reached the Championship Play-off Final but lost to West Ham. His good form that year was rewarded with the Player of the Season award.

In 2005/06 he formed another strong partnership with Claude Davis as Preston reached the play-offs for the second season in a row, conceding just 30 goals in 46 matches with Mawene scoring once in 29 appearances.

Mawene tore cruciate and medial knee ligaments in a pre-season match against Manchester United and missed the entire 2006/07 season. Pronounced fit in June 2007, he has since returned to the first team, with only suspensions and a brief spell on the sidelines around Christmas time preventing him from being an ever present in the side.

In the 2008/09 season, he had another partnership with Sean StLedger and occasionally Liam Chilvers, helping Preston to reach the play-offs again, making 41 appearances during the season.

Last season Mawene made 19 appearances as he was limited to a hamstring injury against Doncaster in August and medial ligament damage in a collision with Andy Lonergan against Newcastle in November.

His last appearance came in a 4-1 defeat at Reading on 2 May 2010 having made 174 league appearances and netted 8 times for the Lilywhites.

On the 7 July 2010 it was confirmed that Mawene couldn't agree contract terms with Preston after they only offered him a one year deal, when he wanted a two year deal.

At one point it looked like he was going to join his former manager Alan Irvine at Sheffield Wednesday. But on the 6 August 2010 it was confirmed that Youl Mawene had signed a one year contract with newly promoted Greek side Panserraikos, bringing an end to his 10 years in English football.
