Paul Edward Hayes wasborn on 20 September 1983in Dagenham, London. Hayes started his footballing career as a school boy with Norwich where he spent 3 years but didn’t make a league appearance.

Hayes signed for Scunthorpe in 2002 and made his league debut in a 1-0 defeat at home to Bury on 14 December. His first league goal came in his next appearance as Scunthorpe beat Southend 4-1 on 25 January 2003. He netted 8 goals in 18 appearances in 2002/03 include a brace in a 3-1 win against Rochdale.

Hayes scored twice in 35 appearances in 2003/04 although 23 of these were as a substitute. He did score a brace in two cup matches during the season.

The 2004/05 saw Scunthorpe promoted to League One with Hayes playing in every match and scoring 18 league goals. He scored twice in a match on four occassions with his final match being a 0-0 draw at Shrewsbury on 7 May 2005. Hayes had scored 28 goals from 101 appearances for Scunthorpe.

Hayes joined Barnsley in the summer of 2005 and scored on debut for the Reds against Swindon and in his second match against former club Scunthorpe. He scored the opener in the League One Play off final against Swansea in May 2006 as well as calmly scoring from the spot in the penalty shoot out which Barnsley won 4–3 gaining them promotion to the Championship..

On 23 February 2007, he joined League One side Huddersfield on loan with view to a permanent deal, as cover for striker Andy Booth, partially because he was falling down Barnsley's pecking order following the signing of two players.

On 10 March 2007, he scored his first goal and what turned out to be only goal for Huddersfield Town in their 2–0 home victory against Bradford.

On 17 July 2007, he returned to Scunthorpe for his second spell with the club. Hayes scored 8 goals in 40 appearances including 5 goals in his last three matches of the season. But this couldn’t stop Scunthorpe returning to Division One for the start of the 2008/09 season.

Hayes scored 17 goals from 44 league appearances which only included one brace in a victory over Hartlepool. He received his second League One Paly-Off winners medal in a 3-2 victory over Millwall on 24 May 2009.

On returning to the Championship Hayes scored 9 goals from 45 appearances, his last match was a 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on 2 May 2010. In his spells with the club he had netted 62 goals from 228 matches.

On 10 May 2010, he signed on a free transfer for Preston on a three-year contract. His debut was a 2-0 defeat at home to Doncaster on 7 August. On his second appearance he scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot in a 5–0 win at Stockport in the League Cup. Hayes then scored his second in the same game after a great run and set up by fellow striker Josh King. He scored his only Lilywhite league goal in a 1-0 win over Portsmouth on 21 August.

After 13 league appearances for PNE Hayes returned to Barnsley on loan on 23 October 2010 as part of a deal to extend Iain Hume’s loan at Preston.

Hayes was released early from his contract by Preston. There was interest from Scunthorpe and but on 21 June 2011, he joined Charlton.  He scored his first goal on his second match for Charlton in a 2–1 away win at Notts County. After the arrival and immediate impact of Yann Kermorgant, opportunities became limited for Hayes.

On the 24th February 2012 Hayes joined Wycombe on a month’s loan. On debut he scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Hartlepool the following day and in his spell scored 6 goals in 6 matches.

On return to Charlton his last match was a 2-2 draw at Preston on 28 April and had netted 3 goals from 20 appearances.

On 20 August 2012, Hayes signed on a free transfer for Brentford on a three-year deal. He made his first appearance as a substitute against Yeovil  on 21 August, missing a penalty as Brentford lost 3–1. Hayes went 12 games without scoring, until he opened his account with both Brentford's goals in a 2–2 home draw with Hartlepool on 27 October. On 10 November, Hayes scored the winner in a 2–1 victory over Carlisle.  He scored two goals in three games in January 2013, in a victory over Southend  and a draw with Leyton Orient.

Hayes later signed for fellow League One side Crawley on a month's loan on 11 March 2013 and made his debut the following day in a 2-2 draw at Yeovil. He scored his first Crawley goal in his second game for the club, a 2–2 draw with Walsall on 16 March. He looked to have scored the winner, until future Brentford teammate Will Grigg bagged an equaliser for the Saddlers. Hayes' loan was extended until the end of the season on 8 April. He scored his second Crawley goal in a 2–0 victory over Sheffield United on 9 April. Hayes finished his Crawley spell having scored two goals in 11 appearances and returned to Brentford on 30 April, after Crawley's final match of the season in a 2-2 draw at Hartlepool three days earlier.

He finished the 2012/13 season having made 32 appearances and scored six goals as Brentford missed out on promotion to League One after a 2–1 playoff final defeat to Yeovil  at Wembley on 19 May, which Hayes played the last eight minutes.

Hayes enjoyed a fine 2013/14 pre-season, scoring in friendly victories over Einheit Rudolstadt, Millwall and Cardiff, but he found himself behind Clayton Donaldson, Will Grigg and Farid El Alagui in the pecking order once the season started and was made available for loan by manager Uwe Rösler. Hayes made his only first team appearance of the 2013/14 season in a 3–2 League Cup first round victory over hometown club Dagenham & Redbridge on 6 August. He later found himself appearing for the Development Squad, playing three games and scoring two goals in the Professional Development League 2 South. Hayes' contract was terminated on 3 December 2013 and he left the club. Following his departure, Hayes was linked with a move to Grimsby and was taken on trial at former club Crawley but manager John Gregory did not offer him a contract.

Amidst interest from Stevenage and former club Scunthorpe, Hayes signed for League Two side Plymouth on a one-month loan deal on 4 October 2013. He endured a fruitless spell and scored no goals in seven appearances and returned to Brentford on 4 November after Plymouth decided against extending his loan.

Hayes trained with former club Scunthorpe  in December 2013 and played in a practice match for the Irons Hayes signed for Scunthorpe (now in League Two) for a third time in his career on 17 December 2013, on a contract running until the end of the 2013/14 season.
