Player Profile – Leon Clarke

Leon Marvin Clarke was born in Wolverhampton on 10 February 1985 and was a product of Wolves youth academy, where he worked his way up to making his first team debut in a League Cup win over Darlington on 23 September 2003. However, he did not feature at all in the team's Premier League campaign of that season.

After a loan period at Kidderminster in Spring 2004, he made his breakthrough into the Wolves first team in the 2004/05 season.  He scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw against Preston on 11 August 2004, and had his most successful time with the club, netting 7 goals from 28 appearances.

During the 2005/06 season his fortunes were mixed, as he benefited from injuries to others in the early part of the season, before slipping down the pecking order later in the season, after new players were signed. He went out on loan twice; first to QPR and then Plymouth.

He played regularly in the first half of the 2006/07 scoring 5 goals from 22 appearances but, in January he was transfer-listed when manager Mick McCarthy said he wanted to "freshen up" the strike force.

On 15 January 2007, Sheffield Wednesday then manager Brian Laws announced that the Owls had completed the signing of Clarke for a fee thought to be around £300,000 signing a contract until 2009. However, only two months later it was announced that Clarke would be going out on loan League One Oldham without even making a starting appearance for Wednesday. In total, Clarke played five games and scored three goals for Oldham. After returning to Hillsborough, he was immediately placed in the first team and scored on his first start in a 2–1 victory against Cardiff. After only one goal and one start in the early stages of the 2007/08 season, he was sent on loan to Southend until January Clarke scored in each of his first five matches and netted 8 goals from 16 appearances.

After returning to his parent club Sheffield Wednesday he was restricted to one start and five substitute appearances for the rest of the 2007/08 season but scored a goal in the last two matches of the season.

In 2008/09 Clarke scored 8 goals from 29 appearances and last season it was 6 goals from 36 matches. This included Clarke scoring the first of Wednesday's two goals in the end of the season relegation battle against Crystal Palace, which could have seen either team relegated from the Championship on 2 May 2010. However in celebrating the goal, he kicked the advertising boarding, dislocating his toe and forcing the striker to be carried off the pitch and subsequently substituted. The game finished 2–2, which saw Wednesday relegated to League One. Three days later it was announced he would not be offered a new contract by former PNE manager Alan Irvine.

He signed for QPR on 21 May 2010 on a 2 year contract but only started in 2 of the 13 matches, one of the two was against PNE, and had not registered a goal for the Hoops before joining PNE for the remainder of the season on loan. He made his PNE debut in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on 1 February 2011. Clarke scored his only goal for Preston two weeks later on his fourth appearance in a 2-2 draw against Watford. His sixth and final match for the Lilywhites was a 2-1 home defeat to Burnley on 26 February.

On the 19 August 2011 QPR confirmed that Clarke's contract had been terminated by mutual consent and signed for Swindon on a two-year contract. Clarke went on to make two appearances for Swindon in the League against Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town.

After a 3–1 loss to Southampton Clarke was involved in an altercation with Claudio Donatelli, the Swindon fitness coach. After Di Canio intervened, the manager and player were shown on television cameras arguing and being separated by coaching staff. Swindon Town chairman Jeremy Wray later confirmed that the club would be looking to offload Clarke on loan as a result of the incident and Di Canio himself stated that Clarke would never play for Swindon again.

On 8 September, he signed a three-month loan deal at League One side Chesterfield. Manager John Sheridan was boss at Oldham in 2007. Clarke scored on his debut and subsequently scored on his home debut, followed by a hat-trick against Carlisle, making a total of five goals in his first three games for the Spireites. He also scored on his return to Sheffield Wednesday but despite this ended up on the losing side as Chesterfield fell to a 3–1 loss.

On 1 January 2012, Clarke signed for Charlton as part of a swap deal in exchange for Paul Benson, Clarke played his first game for Charlton on 2 January 2012, coming on as a substitute against Brentford in a 2–0 win. However, his time at Charlton was short-lived as Clarke struggled in the first; having made one start. In January 2013, Clarke left Charlton after his contract has been cancelled.

On 17 March 2012, Clarke signed for Crawley on loan until the end of the season. He made his Crawley debut in a 1-0 win at Gillingham and scored his first goal on a week later on his second appearance in a 2-1 win against Bradford. The third and final match for the club was a 1-1draw at home to Crewe on 6 April.

Clarke signed on loan with Scunthorpe on 7 September 2012 on a three-month loan deal. He made his debut a day later scoring in a 1–1 draw against Sheffield United. He scored again in the following game, scoring the only goal of the game in a win against Shrewsbury. He scored again 3 days later to make it 3 goals in 3 games since joining the club, in a 1–1 draw against former loan club Oldham. He continued this run by scoring a penalty in the following game, earning Scunthorpe a 1–0 wins against Colchester. He made it 5 goals in 5 games since signing on 29 September in a 2–1 defeat against Portsmouth. With six goals in eight appearance, Sky Sports reports Charlton are keen to bring back Clarke from Scunthorpe, once his loan spell ended and Scunthorpe were unable to sign him on a permanent basis. He made 15 appearances in 11 goals.

On 24 December 2012, it was announced that Clarke was training with Coventry and later joined on loan from Charlton in January with a view to a permanent move. On 1 January 2013, he made his debut in a 1–0 defeat to Shrewsbury. He was handed a first start at Tottenham in the FA Cup, having lost the game 3–0 .On 7 January 2013, he signed permanently for Coventry on a free transfer, signing a two-and-a-half year contract. On 10 January, he went on to score his first goal for Coventry in a 3–2 victory over Preston in the Football League Trophy. He scored in his last appearance for Coventry against former club Scunthorpe to make it 8 goals in 11 league appearances.
