Fenton left a side at the bottom of the table to join Preston who was in the top five. His debut was in a 1-1 draw at home to Blackpool on 22 March 1901 and made a further 5 appearances as PNE finished third.

Fenton played in the first eleven matches of the 1902/03 season helping to provide crosses to forwards Frank Pearson and Percy Smith to score the goals, but after that start he only made a further three appearances for the club. The last of these was a 1-1 draw at Burnley on 14 February 1902 after 20 appearances.
