Player Profile – John Kelly

 

John Kelly was born in Bebington on 20 October 1960. He started his career with Cammel Laird before joining Tranmere and made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Doncaster on 17 September 1979. His first goals came in a brace in a 5-1 victory over Rochdale.

Kelly scored in the first match of the 1980/81 season with a 3-2 victory over Port Vale and scored 3 goals in 4 matches during January 1981.

His last match was a 2-0 win over Port Vale on 5 October 1981. Kelly had scored 9 goals from 64 matches.

Kelly joined Preston and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Bristol City on 10 October 1981. His first goal for the Lilywhites came in the return fixture at Deepdale on 27 February 1982 were Bristol City won 3-1. Between 24 April and 4 May 1982 Kelly scored in 4 consecutive matches. Kelly made 30 league appearances netting, 5 goals.

He scored on his second appearance of the season in a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United on 4 September, but in the 29 appearances during the season his only other league goal came in a 4-1 win over Wigan on News Years Day. Kelley did score on the 5-1 FA Cup win over Shepsted Charterhouse.

His most successful season in front of goal came in the 1983/84 campaign with 13 goals from 34 matches. He scored a brace on two occasions with a 3-3 draw against Brentford on 3 September and in a 2-1 win over Exeter on 26 November 1983.

The 1984/85 saw another brace in a 6-4 defeat at Plymouth on 29 September. His final PNE match was a 1-0 win over York on 11 May 1985 as Preston was relegated to Division 4. He had made 127 league appearances with 27 goals.

Kelly joined Chester and in two seasons Kelly played in 85 matches and scored 17 goals. His first season in 1985/86 saw Chester gain promotion to Division 3.

Kelly had a short spell with Swindon making his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Bradford City on 15 August. His only goal for the club came two weeks later in a 2-0 win at West Brom. His seventh and final league appearance came in a 2-0 win over Oldham 10 October, it was Oldham who he joined and made his Latics debut a month later.

Kelly scored 6 goals from 52 appearances for Oldham before he moved to Walsall for the start of the 1989/90 season. During this season Kelly joined Huddersfield on loan, scoring once in 9 matches.

After one goal in 39 matches, Kelly joined Huddersfield in February 1991 making a further 18 appearances.

In July 1992 Kelly re-joined Chester and his last league goal came in a 2-0 win over former club Huddersfield on 19 December 1992. His final league match was a 1-0 defeat at Reading on 7 April 1993.
