Player Profile – Iain Anderson
Iain William Anderson was born in Glasgow on 23 July 1977 and has been capped over 20 times by Scotland at U-21 level
He joined Dundee in 1994 and made his debut in the 1996/97 season; he stayed at Dens Parkfor five years and scored 14 goals from 70 league matches.
His trickery, pace and powerful right foot earned him a move to the French side Toulouse on 18 July 1999, unable to hold down a first team place he joined Preston on loan on 17 February.
He made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Gillingham on 26 February, his first goal in English football came in a 1-0 home victory against Luton on 18 March. His second goal came 7 days later in another 1-0 win at home to Wrexham.
He made 11 matches on loan as Preston won the Second Division title and earned him a then club record £500,000 permanent move to the Lilywhites on 7 July 2000.
He scored 6 goals in 31 appearances in 2000/01 as PNE reached the Play Offs. He was a substitute for Lee Cartwright in the defeat to Bolton at Cardiff in the Play-Off Final.
Andersonmade 31 appearances in 2001/02, netting 5 league goals. Anderson also set up Preston’s goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge, whipping in a cross from a free kick, which Richard Cresswell headed past Carlo Cudicini. The Blues finally winning the match 3-1
He was famed for cutting inside whilst playing on the left-wing and unleashing powerful efforts at goal as well as being useful from set pieces.
His time at Preston was marred firstly by injuries and then by a change in manager, which saw Craig Brown replace David Moyes, who had joined Everton in March 2002, at the helm for the start of the 2002/03 season. Brown did not approve of Anderson's predominantly attacking play, and criticised him for his lack of defensive awareness. He only made 8 substitute appearances during the season, his last being in a 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on 25 January. In total he had scored 13 goals in 81 appearances.
Subsequently he was loaned out to Tranmere on 27 March 2003 and became an instant hit, scoring on his debut on the half hour in a 2-1 home win over Chesterfieldon 29 March. The second goal was scored by PNE striker Iain Hume. After a goalless draw on his second appearance at Luton, the remaining five matches were all victories with two 1-0 wins against Wycombe and NottsCounty. His fifth appearance saw Andersonscore his second goals with an injury time strike and a 4-0 win over Northampton. His last appearance was a 3-2 win at Stockport on 3 May 2003. Tranmere finished seventh, one point and one place of the Division Two Play Offs.
On 2 July 2003 he joined Grimsby on a free transfer and scored 5 goals in 29 appearances in 2003/04. After one season Anderson rejoined Dundeeon 14 July 2004. In his second spell he netted 3 goals in 33 appearances for Dundee before joining St Mirren on 6 January 2006.
However in March 2007 his contract with the club was terminated by mutual consent, due to numerous injuries. He had scored 3 goals in 11 appearances.
He later signed for RossCounty, Ayr,Elgin and Clydebank before retiring from football aged 31 in 2009 due to personal reasons.
