Player Profile - Frederick Marquis

Frederick Marquis was born in Kirkham on 15 June 1899. The Inside Forward started his career with Preston and made his debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City on 12 March 1921. He made 2 appearances during the 1920/21 season and 4 in 1921/22. In his first 6 matches he was just on the winning side once with a 2-1 home win over Burnley on 12 November 1921.

He made 3 appearances in the 1922/23 season and scored his first goals in the middle of these matches with a hat-trick in a 3-2 home victory over Aston Villa on 6 January 1923.

Marquis made his most appearances for PNE in 1923/24 with 17 appearances. He netted 4 goals, which was his highest in one season for the Lilywhites. This included a brace in a 4-1 win at home to Manchester City on 15 March 1924.

His final goal for North End came in a 3-1 win at Deepdale against Nottingham Forest on 15 November 1925. His last match was a 0-0 draw at Cardiff on 2 May 1926. He had scored 9 goals in 35 matches.

For the 1926/27 season Marquis joined Third Division North side Tranmere. He made more appearances in this season than his previous five for Preston.  He scored on his Rovers debut in a 2-1 win at home to Durham City on 29 August 1925. Marquis scored a brace on four occasions during the season. Twice within a week on consecutive matches with a 3-2 defeat at New Brighton, then a 3-1 win at Walsall. In total he scored 22 goals in the season from 41 league matches. He was the highest scorer for the season for Tranmere with Bob White in second place with 13 goals.

Marquis’s final season was in 1927/28 with 10 league goals from 29 matches. He again started his season with a goal against Durham City, this time a 3-0 away win.  He scored a brace twice during the season. The first time was his first home match of the season with a 4-1 win over New Brighton on 30 August 1927. His second was his penultimate match and last home game which saw Tranmere beat Walsall on 30 April 1928. His last match was a 2-0 win at Nelson on 7 May.  In total Marquis netted 32 goals from 70 league appearances.

Frederick Marquis passed away in 1957.
