Player Profile – Willie Hall
William (Willie) Furness Hall was born in Walton-le-Dale on 6 February 1926. He started with the juniors as a goalkeeper at Preston.
He was the understudy to Jimmy Gooch and made his debut in a 2-0 home victory over Sunderland on 13 March 1948. Gooch returned for the next two matches before Hall played in the defeats against Chelsea and Portsmouth. Gooch returned again but Hall played in the final three matches of the season. His seventh and last game is remembered for all the wrong reasons as PNE lost 7-0 to Blackpool at Deepdale on 1 May. Blackpool was without Matthews and Mortensen and Hall was blamed for six of the seven goals.
Hall spent the 1948/49 season in the reserves before joining Blackpool in July 1949 as cover for George Farm. He had to wait until the 1952/53 season before he made his Blackpool debut and made 3 appearances during the season
In July 1953 Hall joined Reading and made 16 appearances for the Royals as they finished eighth in Division Three South in the 1953/54 season.
This was his last season in the football league and passed away in 1986.
