Player Profile – Andrew Davies

Andrew John Davies was born on 17 December 1984 in Stockton-on-Tees and went to Northfield School in Billingham near Middlesbrough. He joined Middlesbrough as a thirteen-year-old and moved up the ranks of the club, achieving a place in the reserve side. He signed professional terms with October 2002 after impressing in the Under-19s and as captain of the reserve team. He made his debut on 6 November 2002, in a 3-1 League Cup defeat against Ipswich. His Barclaycard Premiership debut came on 28 January 2003 in a 5–2 defeat at home to Aston Villa.

He made nine further appearances during the 2003/04 season before suffering a broken leg in a reserve league game in March 2004. He made two appearances in the first half of the 2004/05 season before joining Championship side Queens Park Rangers on an initial one month's loan in January to gain some first team experience, eventually remaining there for three months. His debut was a 1-0 home win over Stoke on 14 January 2005, was received his first red card in a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield United on 9 April. In total Davies made 9 league appearances for QPR.

In July 2005 he was loaned out again, to Derby, his loan was initially for a period of six months, although it was later extended to a full season's loan. His debut was a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton on 6 August 2005, with his next appearance being at Deepdale a week later with the same score. Davies received a red card in a 1-1 draw at Crewe on 11 September but a week later scored his first goal with a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton. Davies then scored a brace in a 2-0 home victory over Norwich on 3 December 2005. However, an injury crisis at Middlesbrough prompted them to recall Davies in January 2006 after 23 appearances. Davies had generally impressed during his time at Derby, despite being sent off on three occasions. On his return to the Riverside he played a role in Middlesbrough's journey to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and final of the UEFA Cup. With Gareth Southgate committing to youth in 2006/07, Davies found his way into the first team and made 23 appearances in all. His last Boro appearance was a 2-0 Carling Cup defeat at Tottenham on 26 September 2007 and had made 53 league appearances in total.

Davies signed for Southampton on 9 October 2007 on an initial 3-month loan with a view to a permanent transfer. His Saints debut was a 1-0 home defeat to Charlton on 3 November. On 10 January 2008 the signing was made permanent, for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £1m.

He missed the last few matches of the 2007/08 season as a result of a fractured cheek bone incurred in March 2008. Despite only playing for half a season, he was voted the Saints "player of the season".

On 19 August 2008 he signed for newly promoted Stoke for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year contract. Davies did not feature until the beginning of December 2008 when he made several appearances on the bench with his first being an away game against Newcastle. Davies made his Stoke debut in a 1-0 home defeat against Manchester United, coming on as a substitute for Rory Delap in the 72nd minute on Boxing Day 2008. He made his first Stoke City start against Hartlepool in the F.A Cup third Round which ended in a shock 2–0 victory for the League One Side on 3 January. Davies sustained an injury in the 71st minute when he fell into the Hartlepool dugout. Davies played no further part in Stoke's 2008/09 campaign.

On 13 February 2009 Davies signed for Preston on a one month emergency loan and made his Lilywhite debut the following day with a 1-0 victory over Norwich at Deepdale, this was to be his only victory with the club in 5 appearances. After three away defeats at Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, his final match was a 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday on 10 March 2009.

Having failed to make the bench for Stoke at the start of the 2009/10 league seasononly played in the 1-0 win at Leyton Orient in the Carling Cup Davies joined Sheffield United on a three-month loan in September 2009. Davies made his debut in the Steel City derby on 18 September with United winning 3-2. With his loan expiring in December Davies returned to Stoke having played eight times for The Blades.

After being left out of Stoke's 25-man squad, Davies joined Walsall for an initial month’s loan on 6 October 2010. Davies made 3 appearances for Walsall with his debut, a 2-1 home win against Exeter on 9 October his only victory. After a 1-1 draw at Dagenham the following week, his final match saw Walsall lose 4-1 at home to Tranmere on 23 October.

On 18 February, he re-joined Boro on loan for the rest of the 2010/11 season and made his debut against in a 3–2 victory at Millwall the same day.

On 3 August 2011 Davies joined Crystal Palace on a one-month loan deal, but only made one league appearance for the Eagles before returning to Stoke.

He signed for Bradford City on a three-month loan on 23 September 2011. He was sent off on both in, a 1-0 win at home to Torquay on 8 October and in his next game three weeks later, following a three-game suspension in a 0-0 draw at Swindon. This prompted a further four-game ban. In December 2011 Davies agreed to extend his loan until the end of the season. He scored his first goal for the club with a curling free kick on 21 January 2012, in a 1–1 draw at home to Burton Albion. His second goal of 2012 came in the 5th minute of injury time against Port Vale in a 1 – 1 draw on 14 February. Davies was sent off for a third time in the 2011/12 season following a post-match brawl against Crawley Town. He received a 5 match ban and was one of 5 players to receive red cards following the brawl.

On 24 May 2012 Bradford announced that Davies had agreed a permanent contract on a one-year deal. He played his first game since joining the club permanently on 18 August against Gillingham. He scored his first goal of the season on 25 August in a 5–1 victory over AFC Wimbledon, scoring directly from a free-kick. In total he scored 4 in the 2012/13 season which was the most in one season so far. On 8 June 2013, Davies signed a new 2 year deal with Bradford City with the option of a third year. On 11 October, it was revealed that Davies was to be out for up to four months with injury, after undergoing knee surgery. He returned to the side in a 0-0 home draw against Preston on 28 January 2014 and has now made over 80 league appearances for the club.

Internationally Davies received one cap at England U21 level. His elder brother, Mark is a cricketer with Kent.
