Player Profile – Jack Atherton

John James (Jack) Atherton was born in Preston in 1917.

The inside-forward stated his short career with his home town team, signing on 1 May 1934 and made his debut, wearing the number 8 shirt in a 2-2 draw at Everton on New Year’s Day in 1937. The following day he scored his only goal on his home debut for the Lilywhites and registered his only victory for the club in a 2-0 win. His final two matches for Preston were both away defeats with a 5-0 loss at Wolves on 9 January and a 3-1 defeat at Charlton on 27 February.

On 1 June 1938 Atherton joined Third Division South side Brighton & Hove Albion. Wearing the number 10 shirt his debut was a 1-1 draw at Port Vale on 3 December 1938. Atherton’s only goals for Brighton came in one match by scoring a brace in a 4-3 defeat at Notts County on 17 December. A week later he registered his first win for the club on his fourth match with a 2-0 win at Walsall. His three other victories were all at home starting with a 1-0 win against Bristol City on 27 December. Atherton had to wait almost 3 months for his next match with a 1-0 win over Torquay. His ninth and final league match was in the reverse match from his debut, this time beating Port Vale 1-0 on 8 April 1939.

Jack Atherton passed away in 1961.
