The 2010/11 season saw McLaughlin make 7 league appearances, but wasn’t on the winning side once as PNE were relegated from the Championship.

His first six matches in League One saw the opposite as Phil Brown’s team won all the matches he was involved in up to the end of September

McLaughlin has represented Northern Ireland at youth international level.

He received his first call-up for the senior national team in October 2011, making his senior début later that month, in a 3-0 defeat against Italy on 11 October 2011.

The arrival of Graham Westley saw McLaughlin make just three appearances for him, the last match was a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United on 18 February 2012. He signed a two-month loan deal with Shrewsbury in March 2011 and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Crewe on 3 March. His only victory for Shrewsbury was on his third appearance a week later with a 1-0 home win over Burton. His fourth and final game for Shrewsbury was a 1-0 defeat at Plymouth on 17 March.

He was transfer listed by Preston in May 2012 after making 24 appearances for the Lilywhites.

McLaughlin joined Fleetwood on 20 July 2012 made his Cod Army debut in a 1-0 defeat in the Capital One Cup at home to Nottingham Forest.
