Player Profile - Billy Hayes

 

William Edward (Billy) Hayes was born in Croston on 8 November 1895. The goalkeeper started his a career with Eccleston before joining Preston in 1912. Bert Taylor remained the first choice so joined Chorley on loan.

 

Following the departure of Taylorfor the 1914/15 season saw Preston use three goalkeepers. The first game was with Sydney Newton before Hayes took over the shirt for the second game of the season as PNE drew 1-1 at home to Huddersfieldon 5 September 1914. He wore the Goalkeepers shirt for the next nine games until a 2-0 defeat at Wolves on 31 October. In those ten matchs PNE won half of them and kept five clean sheets. For the twelve game of the season saw Charles Jones take up the journey. Hayes didn’t play for Prestonagain in the Football League due to the Great War.

 

Hayes joined Brightonin 1919/20 playing in the Southern League, and the following season the Seagulls joined the Football League.

 

He was the goalkeeper in their first league match as Brighton lost 2-0 at Southend on 28 August 1919. He just missed one match during the season as they finished fifth bottom in Division Three.

 

Hayes was an ever-present for the next two seasons as the Seagulls finished fourth in Division Three South with 19 clean sheets. The 1923/24 season he kept 21 clean sheets including seven in a row. He made 167 league appearances and including cup matches he totalled 175 consecutive appearances which was not beaten until Eric Gill in 1956.

 

For the 1924/25 season Hayes joined Division Three south side Southend. In two seasons he made 51 league appearances as he Shrimpers finished both seasons in mid table.

 

He then retuned north making 41 appearances for Accrington in 1926/27 and 16 appearances for Stockport in 1926/27.

 

Hayes then moved into non-league with Winsford United, Burscough , Stalybridge Celtic and Bacup Borough.
