Player Profile – Tommy Crawley

Tommy Crawley was born in Hamilton on 10 November 1911. He started his career with Preston making his debut in a 2-2 home draw against Everton on 18 September 1935. His second and final appearance was a 2-0 win at Deepdale against Wolves three days later.

Crawly joined Coventry in February 1936 and scored on debut in a 5-1 win against Cardiff on 21 February 1936. He made one other appearance during the season as Coventry won the Division Three South title.

He found first team opportunities limited in the next two seasons with just 12 league appearances. The 1938/39 season saw Crawley start with a brace with a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on 22 October and scored 14 goals in his first 11 league matches. This included seven goals in three matches with a hat-trick in a 5-1 home win against Nottingham Forest 28 January 1931 in-between a brace. He didn’t score in the remaining seven matches.

The 1939/40 season was cancelled due to the outbreak of WWII, but in his final match he scored a brace in a 4-2 win at home to Barnsley on 2 September.

Following the resuming of league football after the war Crawley scored once in 13 appearances. His last goal for the Sky Blues was a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle on 16 September 1946. His last match was a 3-2 win over Swansea on 8 April 1947. He had netted 16 goals from 45 league appearances.

Tommy Crawley died in 1976.
