Player Profile – George Baker

George Baker was born in Sandiford and played as a full back on both sides. His career started with New Tupton Ivanhoe in 1903.

Baker joined Second Division Chesterfield in 1905. Whilst with the Spireites they struggled at the bottom end of the table, just avoiding re-election finishing third bottom in 1905/06 and 1906/07. They finished second bottom in 19/07/08, in 1908/09 they finished in the same position above Blackpool but failed to be re-elected.

Baker scored twice in 80 appearances for Chesterfield, but following losing their league status Baker joined First Division Preston on a free transfer.

Baker only made one appearance in 1909/10 as Tom Rodway played the right back position for all the other matches. His debut was a 3-1 win at Woolwich Arsenal on 23 April 1910.

The following season he made eight consecutive appearances in October / November after Rodway suffered a knee injury.

Baker made 9 appearances in 1911/12 as the Lilywhites suffered relegation to Division Two. His 24th and last appearances came in the 1912/13 season in a 3-1 defeat at Fulham on 9 November 1912.
