Player Profile – John Lowey

John Anthony Lowey was born in Manchester on 7 March 1958. He started as an apprentice with Manchester United and signed professional forms in March 1975 after some impressive displays at youth and reserve level. He couldn’t break into the team.

He joined North American Soccer league side Chicago Sting, netting 5 goals from 28 appearances. He returned to England with Blackburn in March 1977 and later to Port Vale in December 1977 but injuries led to not making a league appearance.

He returned to the USA with American Soccer League side California Sunshine and made 21 appearances with 10 goals.

In October 1978 Lowey joined Sheffield Wednesday and in two years he netted 4 goals in 42 appearances. In November 1980 he joined Blackburn for the second time, but this time stayed for nearly six years. In that time he scored 14 goals from 141 league appearances.

In July 1986 Lowey joined Wigan but just made 3 appearances, before four months later he was loaned to Chesterfield and made 3 appearances. Also in the 1986/87 he was loaned to York in March 1987 and made 6 appearances.

Lowey transferred to Preston in August 1987 and made his debut on the opening day of the season as Preston lost 1-0 at home to a former club Chesterfield on 15 August. His third appearance he scored his only goal for the Lilywhites as PNE lost 2-1 at home to Brentford on 29 September.  He made 4 league appearances in total but his final appearance came in a 5-2 victory over Stockport in the Sherpa Van Trophy on 27 October.

He joined Chester in March 1988 and made 9 appearances for the remainder in the 1988/89 season.

Lowey then spent six years in Australia with Brisbane Lions and scored 18 goals in 90 appearances.
