John     John (Ian) Grieve Wilson was born in Kennoway on 11 February 1923. He was spotted by Preston whilst playing for Fofar and joined Preston in November 1946 to play on the opposite wing to Tom Finney.

He scored on his debut as PNE won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on 20 February. His league debut came two days later, scoring in the 5-2 win over Brentford. Wilson then scored in his next two matches with mixed results, a 4-1 defeat at Arsenal and then a 6-2 home win over Huddersfield. In total he netted 5 goals from 14 appearances in the 1946/47 season.

His next appearance for the Lilywhites wasn’t until the 2-1 win over Grimsby on 6 March 1948. His final appearance was scoring in a 4-2 defeat at Wolves on 10 April.

In June 1948 Wilson joined Burnley but only scored once in 19 appearances. Unable to gain a regular place in the starting line up he helped the Clarets to the Central League Championship in 1948/49.

In March 1950 Wilson joined Leicester but struggled to get into the first team with 2 gaols in 12 appearances in 19 months.

Wilson moved to Division Three North side Chesterfield in October 1951 and scored 18 goals in 77 appearances before joining Rotherham in May 1953.

He enjoyed the best spell of his career at Rotherham as the club just missed out on promotion to the First Division on goal difference but scored four goal in a 6-1 victory over Liverpool. In total Wilson scored 45 league goals in 108 appearances.

Wilson later had a spell with non-league Boston United before emigrating to Canada. He played an active part in the development of football across the Atlantic.
