Player Profile - Ted Harper

Edward Cashfield (Ted) Harper was born in Sheerness on 22 August 1901. He played junior football in Kent before signing for Whitstable Town and Sheppey United.

In 1923 Harper joined First division Blackburn and scored 18 goals in 42 appearances in the 1923/24 season, but lost his place the following season. The signing of Syd Puddlefoot from Falkirk in February 1925 helped him as Puddlefoot provided the passes as he scored 43 goals in 37 appearances. This was a Football league record at the time and is still a club record for Blackburn. He scored thirty more than the next highest goalscorer Arthur Rigby. One match on 9 September 1925 saw him score five goals in a 7-1 win at Newcastle. He also won his one and only England Cap on 17 April 1926 against Scotland, but didn't score.

He finished top scorer again in 1926/27 with 35 goals from 39 appearances, 21 more than second place Puddlefoot.

After scoring 106 league goals from 144 appearances Harper joined Sheffield Wednesday in November 1927. Although he scored a hat-trick on debut in a 6-4 win at Derby injuries limited him to just 18 appearances in 16 months, but scored 13 goals in the process.

In March 1929 Harper joined Second Division Tottenham for £5,500, breaking a club record fee which had just been set a few weeks earlier when Baden Herod was signed for £4,000 from Brentford. The club record fee stood for seven years until Andy Duncan was signed from Hull for £6,000 in March 1935.

Harper scored 11 goals in 11 appearances in 1928/39, finishing only 5 goals behind top scorer Frank Osborne. The following season he was top scorer with 14 goals from 19 appearances, 5 ahead of Billy Cook and Osborne.

He then set a new Spurs scoring record when he netted 36 goals from 30 appearances in 1930/31 and would have scored more if he had not missed six of the last eight matches due to injury. Harper finished 23 goals more than second placed Cook.

Harper scored 62 goals from 63 league appearances for Spurs before he joined Second Division Preston in December 1931 in a £5,000 joint transfer with Dick Rowley.

He arrived with the Lilywhites, third from bottom and scored on his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Plymouth on 12 December 1930. His home debut saw him score a brace in a 5-2 victory over Bradford City. He finished the season with 24 goals from 23 appearances and scored three hat-tricks, away at Southampton and at home to Wolves and Plymouth. Preston finished in thirteenth position and 15 goals more than second placed Tom Scott.

The 1932/33 season saw him score 37 goals in 41 appearances, a club record for PNE beating a record of 28 was previously held by Tommy Roberts, which is unlikely ever to be matched; the longest he went without a goal was just three games. His haul included netting four goals twice in a 6-1 win at home to Burnley and a 5-0 home win against Lincoln, as well as hat-tricks at home to West Ham and Manchester United. In total he scored 48 goals in the season as he scored six in the Lancashire Cup (including five against Everton) and a further five in friendlies. Bob Kelly, who was 39, finished second in the scoring charts with nine goals but Preston could not finished higher than ninth.

His last game for Preston was a 1-0 defeat at Bradford City on 21 October 1933 after making 75 league appearances, and scoring 67 goals the lure of the First Division was too great and joined Blackburn for the second time. He was joint top scorer in 1933/34 with Jack Brunton with 15 goals. Harper made a further 27 appearances for Rovers before retiring at the end of the 1934/35 season.

Harper then joined the coaching staff at Blackburn and past away in 1959.
