Player Profile – Les Vernon
Joseph Leslie (Les) Vernon was born in Sheffield on 27 December 1905. He was a prolific goalscorer with non-league Worksop Town before joining Bury in 1927.
He stayed for seven years and netted 50 goals in 127 league appearances. His first season with the Shakers in 1927/28 saw the club finished fifth in Division One but was relegated in the following season.
Preston had been promoted to Division One at the end of the 1933/34 season and the new season in Division One saw Vernon join PNE. He made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on 17 November 1934 and made two further appearances during the season.
The following season Vernon made four appearances and scored his first goal with the club in a 3-1 victory over Liverpool on 11 April 1936. The 1936/37 season Vernon made seven appearances. His last for the Lilywhites was a 1-0 win on 24 April at Portsmouth; this was a week after his second goal for the club as PNE lost 5-2 at Deepdale against the Champions Manchester City. Preston got to the Cup Final in the 1936/37 but Vernon didn’t make any appearances in the competition.
The 1937/38 season saw Vernon join Swansea Town and made seven appearances for the club as the Division Two side finished in eighteenth position.
He passed away in 1979.
