Terence Ian Gray was born in Bradford on 3 June 1954 and started his career with Chelsea as an amateur in 1971/72 but didn’t make an appearance for the club.

In August 1973 Gray joined Third Division Huddersfield  and made his debut in a 5-2 defeat at Southend on 3 November 1973. His first goal came as a substitute netting the only goal in a home win over Grimsby on 20 March and made 13 appearances during the season.

The 1975/76 season saw Gray score 15 goals in 29 league matches and 4 cup goals. Netting in his first three appearances in the season. Gray scored 4 braces in the season including 2 during a 6 goal spell in 5 matches in February 1976.

The following season Grey scored 6 goals in 18 matches including his first hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Scunthorpe on 9 April 1977 and a brace in a 3-2 win at Stockport on 4 March.

Gray only missed one League match in the 1977/78 and scored on his 100th league appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Northampton on 27 September.

His last goal for the Terriers was a 3-2 win over Scunthorpe on 18 November 1978 and his last match was a 2-0 defeat at Hartlepool on 2 May 1979. He had scored 36 goals in 163 appearances.

In July 1979 Gray joined Southend and made his debut in a 2-1 win at home to Brentford on 15 August. His first goal came on his fifth appearance defeating Plymouth  4-1 on 21 September. Gray scored 7 league appearances as Southend was relegated to Division Four.

Gray was an ever-present in 1980/81 as Southend won the Fourth Division title and netted 17 goals in the campaign and 3 braces including 5-1 victories over Port Vale & Halifax. His last match for Southend was a 2-0 defeat at Chesterfield  on 3 March 1982 and had scored 28 goals in 110 league games.

Gray joined Third Division side Bradford City and made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Halifax and scored in his next appearance four days later in a 4-0 victory at Hartlepool. He made 38 league appearances and netted 8 goals including a brace on two occasions. The following season Gray scored two more braces with 7 goals from 31 league appearances.

His last appearance for Bradford was a 1-0 defeat at Orient and scored 15 goals from 76 appearances. Gray joined Preston and made his debut on 3 November in a 3-3 draw at Deepdale against Burnley. Two weeks later he scored in his fourth appearance, netting the first goal in a 4-3 FA Cup win over Bury. Gray made 7 appearances as the Lilywhites were relegated to Division Four.

His only PNE league goal came in a 3-2 home win over Colchester on 23 November 1985. His last appearance was a 4-0 defeat at Aldershot on 3 May 1986 as the Lilywhites had to seek re-election.  Gray had made 40 league appearances for North End.

Gray joined Rochdale but didn’t make an appearance and later moved into non-league football with Ossett Town in 1987 and Goole Town in 1988
