Profile ANDY SAVILLE


Andrew Victor Saville was born in Hull on 12 December 1964 and signed a professional contract with his home town club on 23 September 1983. Saville was the top scorer in Hull's Second Division side of 1986/87. After 101 League appearances for the Tigers, scoring 18 goals Saville joined Walsall for a fee of £100,000 on 23 March 1989.


Saville scored twice on his debut and stayed with Walsall for just under a year before joining Walsall for a fee of £80,000 on 9 March 1990. Saville had made 38 appearances, scoring 5 goals.


Saville was with Barnsley for just over two years scoring 21 goals in 82 league appearances before transferring to Hartlepool on 13 March 1992 for a club record fee of £60,000.


Saville scored an 87 minute penalty as Hartlepool beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on 2 January 1993 which was being shown live on the BBC. After that victory Hartlepool when on a league record of 1227 minutes without scoring a goal. The fifteen match run was ended on 6 March 1993 in the 54 minute when Saville scored at Blackpool.


Saville made 37 league appearances for Hartlepool scoring 14 goals. His ratio in the FA Cup was more than one a game with five goals coming from four appearances. Saville joined Birmingham for a fee of £155,000 on 22 March 1993.


The 1994/95 season saw Saville join Burnley on loan at the end of December 1994 for a month scoring one goal in four appearances. Saville helped Birmingham win the second Division Title and was victorious in the Auto Windscreens Shield against Carlisle at Wembley.


On 29 July 1995 Saville joined Preston for a fee of £100,000 after scoring 17goals in 59 appearances for the Blues.


Saville made an immediate hit with his new partner Steve Wilkinson as Saville scored on his debut in the 2-1 home defeat against Lincoln on August 12 1995. Saville hit a purple patch at the end of September, scoring 11 goals in 7 matches. Both Saville and Wilkinson scored hat-tricks as PNE demolished Mansfield 6-0 on 21 October. Saville's second hat-trick of the season two weeks later saw PNE beat Leyton Orient 4-0.

Goals game regularly for Saville scoring five goals in four matches on two separate occasions. The last of these was in the final four matches of the season, a brace at Leyton Orient to give PNE the Third Division Championship and the culminating in one of the two goals against Exeter on the final day of the season as PNE finished three points above Gillingham.


Saville scored 29 league goals for the season, the most since Alex Dawson in 1963/64. Saville finished just two behind Alan Shearer for the most goals in any league. Saville won the official player of the year and was selected with three other PNE players for the Third Division XI.


Unfortunately he could not re-create the form in 1996/97 scoring just one goal in twelve matches. His last appearance for PNE was in the 1-0 defeat at Stockport on 12 October 1996 after 56 appearances for the Whites.


Saville joined Wigan for £125,000 on 25 October.
Vice Chairman Duncan Sharpe sanctioned the signing as Chairman Dave Whelan was abroad at
the time. Saville made his Latics League debut on 29 October 1996 against Swansea City at the Vetch Field. The Blues lost the game 2-1. Saville scored in his next two matches in a 3-0 win at Carlisle and a 4-1 home win against Hereford . After that he only scored two more goals in 14 appearances but was enough to win another Third Division Title as Wigan pipped Fulham for the Championship on goal difference. With competition for places Saville played his 25 and last game for Wigan in the 2-1 win against Fulham on 27 September 1997.


Saville joining Cardiff for £60,000 four days later making his debut in a Welsh derby against Swansea, as Swansea won 1-0. Saville scored in his next match against Doncaster in a 1-1 draw. In the reverse fixture he scored a brace as Doncaster lost 7-1. Saville also scored all three goals on 28 February 1998 as Cardiff drew at Scunthorpe 3-3.


Saville was not part of Frank Burrows plans for 1998/99, although he did score in his final appearance for Cardiff as the Bluebirds lost 3-1 at home to Peterborough on 15 August 1988. Saville had scored 12 goals in 35 appearances.


Saville joined Hull on a month's loan in September 1998. His debut for the Tigers was a 2-1 home defeat against Halifax. Two further appearances also ended in defeat.


Saville family lived in Yorkshire and joined Scarborough on 12 March 1999 and made nine substitute appearances without scoring a goal. His final league appearance was on 8 May 1999 in a 1-1 draw against Peterborough as Scarborough lost their league status.


Saville later played non-league football for Goole Town.
