Player Profile – Micky Brown

Michael Anthony (Micky) Brown was born in Birmingham on 8 February 1968 and was probably most well known for playing for Shrewsbury during the late 80's and 90's, in which during this period he joined the club three times and made a record 418 league appearances out of 500 in his career.

He started as an apprentice with Shrewsburyand signed professional forms in February 1986 and in his first spell scored 9 goals from 190 appearances.

On 15 August 1991 Brown joined Bolton for a fee of £100,000 with Tom Kelly also for £100,000, but only made 33 appearance with 3 league goals before returning to Shrewsbury on 23 December 1992 for a cut price £25,000.

In his second spell for Shrewsbury Brown netted 11 goals in 67 appearances and helped the shrews to the Third Division Championship in 1993/94, before joining Prestonon 30 November 1994 for a fee of £75,000.

Injury prevented making his debut until the 1995/96 when he was a substitute for Lee Cartwright in a 3-3 home draw against Cambridge on 2 September, He then made five first eleven appearances but only finished 90 minutes once. His only goal for the club came in a 5-0 home win over Cardiff on New Years Day, scoring one of the quickest substitute goals ever when he scored 30 seconds after coming on. He made 10 appearances during the season as Preston won the Third Division Championship.

Brown joined Rochdale on loan on 13 September 1996 and made his debut in a 2-1 win over Doncaster the following day. His fifth and last appearance came in a 2-2 home draw against Carlisle on 12 October.

Brown returned to PNE and made 6 further appearances in 1996/97 his last being a 0-0 draw against Rotherham on 2 November 1996.

He joined Shrewsbury on loan on 12 December 1996 which was made permanent a month later for a transfer fee of £25,000.

On 15 April 2000 he scored twice in a 4-2 home defeat against former club Rochdale whose goalscoreers included former PNE players Graeme Atkinson and Tony Ellis. But his most important goal in the last game of the 1999/2000 season when he scored against Exeter to secure the Shrews Football League status.

He created a new Shrewsbury appearance record when he overtook Colin Griffith’s tally of 406 before being released in the summer of 2001, in total he netted 36 goals from his 418 league appearances.

Brown joined Boston United on 15 August 2001where he won a Nationwide Conference winners medal in 2002 with 3 goals from 26 appearances

His final club was Chester who he joined on 17 May 2002 which was the club who had been relegated thanks to his Shrewsbury heroics in 2000 but only stayed for one season.

In September 2007 Brown joined West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division side Shawbury United from Newtown.

In June 2009 he joined Shrewsbury as part-time fitness coach.
