Simon John Gibson was born in Nottingham on 10 December 1964. The central defender started as an apprentice with Chelsea and signed professional forms in December 1982.

He was unable to break into the first team and joined Fourth Division Swindon in November 1983. Gibson helped teams performances improved as the club finished in seventeenth position in the 1983/84 season.

After 3 goals in 31 appearances he was signed by Alan Kelly, joining the Lilywhites in December 1984. Gibson scored on debut in a 1-1 draw at Deepdale against Brentford on 15 December. His next goal came in the Freight Rover Trophy 2-2 draw at Rochdale, Gibson scored a further two goals in 1984/85 as Preston were relegated to the Fourth Division. These were a 1-0 victory over Bolton on 9 March and a 4-1 defeat at home to Hull on 23 April, in total Gibson made 17 league appearances.

Gibson made 25 league appearances in 1985/86 as Preston finished second bottom of the Fourth Division and having to seek re-election. He scored two goals during the season; the last was in the penultimate match of the campaign in a 2-2 draw at home to Exeter on 26 April.
