Player Profile – Gareth Ainsworth

Gareth Ainsworth was born in Blackburn on 10 May 1973.

From leaving school Ainsworth joined his home town club and remained at Blackburn for 2 years but did not make a league appearance. As an apprentice he used to clean Frank Stapleton's boots.

In August 1991 he moved to Northwich Victoria were Sammy McIllroy was the manager and Norman Whiteside was the physio.

In January 1992 Ainsworth signed a 6 month contract with Preston and made his football league debut away at Shrewsbury but lost 2-0. During his first stint with Preston he made 5 league appearances. He scored his first goal against Hull in an Autoglass Trophy match losing 3-2.

In August 1992 he signed for John Beck's Cambridge and made his debut against Bristol City scoring the winner in the 84th minute with a header from a corner.

For the second time in December 1992 he joined Preston and John Beck making 82 league appearances and scoring 12 goals. At the end of the 1992/93 season Preston were relegated to the 4th tier.

The following season was the most productive for Preston reaching double figures in the goals tally although the season ended in disappointment as Preston lost the Play Off final at Wembley against Wycombe.

During 1994/95 season Ainsworth only played in 16 League matches and saw the departure of John Beck in November 1994.

Ainsworth was transferred to Lincoln in October 1995 for £50,000 following John Beck for the third time. He made his debut against Mansfield as a centre forward partnering Darren Huckerby. The 1996/97 season Ainsworth played in every game scoring 22 goals.

After 83 league appearances and 37 goals he transferred to Port Vale in September 1997 for £500,000. He made his full home debut against Crewe scoring in the 7 minute. Ainsworth made 40 appearances that season scoring 5 goals. Port Vale beat Huddersfield on the last day of the season to stay in Division One.

After 55 appearances and 10 goals for Port Vale he was transferred for £2m to Wimbledon in September 1997. He made his Premiership debut in the number 26 shirt against Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 win.

Unfortunately injuries limited his Premiership career making only 8 appearances in 1998/99 and 2 in 1999/2000 although he did score 2 goals in this season as Wimbledon were relegated. In the three seasons between 2000/01 and 2002/03 he made a further 26 appearances. In the 36 league games for Wimbledon, Ainsworth scored 6 goals.

In March 2002 he signed for Preston for the third, but this time on loan. The following season he was loaned to Walsall. On both occasions he appeared in 5 league games scoring 1 goal.

In March 2003 he transferred from Wimbledon to Cardiff for £50,000 making 9 appearances.

Ainsworth transferred to his current club Q.P.R in July 2003 on a free transfer and made his debut scoring twice in a 5-0 thrashing against Blackpool. At the end of the 2003/04 saw QPR promoted to the Championship. Last season was his most productive for QPR scoring 9 goals in 43 league appearances.
