Player Profile ANGUS MORRISON

Angus Cameron Morrison was born in Dingwall on 26 April 1924.

Morrison started his career with Ross County and was signed by Derby County for a box of cigars in October 1944. The gift was a thank you for his recommendation. Morrison played as a forward at either centre or outside-left.

Morrison played in the first six matches of the FA Cup of 1945/46. That season the matches between the Third Round and the Semi Final were played over two legs. Morrison scored one goal in the Third Round second leg as Derby beat Luton 3-0 at home to win 9-0 on aggregate. Morrison was not selected for the final as Derby beat Charlton 4-1 in extra time at Wembley.

In two seasons Morrison made 55 league appearances for the Rams scoring 21 goals with Derby finishing fourteenth in 1946/47 and fourth in 1947/48.

One of the most famous matches was played at Deepdale on 6 December 1947. Derby had come into the match unbeaten in the last ten whilst PNE had lost the last three. Derby had quickly gone into a 2-0 with Morrison scoring the second goal in off the post. Preston pulled it back to 2-2 before Morrison scored his second with a solo effort on 32 minutes to give the Rams a 3-2 lead. PNE scored again to make it 3-3 before Morrison scored his hat-trick for Derby to lead 4-3. Preston finished stronger and scored four goals without reply to give PNE a 7-4 victory.

The arrival of Scottish international Billy Steel to Derby in June 1947 unsettled Morrison and in November 1948 he signed for PNE for £8,000. His debut for PNE was at home to Wolves on 27 November 1948 in a 1-1 draw. His first goals were in the following week scoring twice in a 5-3 defeat at Bolton. Morrison made it 4 goals in 3 appearances as PNE beat Liverpool 3-2. But Morrison's 8 goals in 19 appearances were not enough to stop Preston's relegation to Division Two.

Morrison was an ever present in PNE's Second Division Championship side of 1950/51. Morrison was an ever present again the following season scoring 12 goals over the season and was on the score sheet in seven of the last ten league games of the season as PNE finished seventh.

The 1952/53 season saw Morrison play every league game for the third successive season as PNE finished runners up to Arsenal on goal average. Morrison scored 13 times during the season, including a brace in a 4-2 victory against Blackpool on New Years Day 1953.

His run of 130 consecutive games ended on 2 September 1953 when he missed the defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. Morrison made 35 league appearances during the 1953/54 season and scored one of the two goals in PNE's 3-2 defeat against West Brom in the FA Cup Final.

In 1954/55 Morrison made 19 appearances for Preston but the following season he was limited to just 6 appearances. His final appearance for Preston was on 13 April 1957 in a 2-0 victory at Manchester City .

After 261 appearances scoring 69 goals for Preston and an appearance for Scotland B against England B, Morrison joined Millwall. Morrison scored 4 goals in 15 appearances for Millwall in the 1957/58 season before he had spells as player-manager at Nuneaton Borough and Belper Town.

Angus Morrison died on 18 December 2002.
