Player Profile – Michael Keane

Michael Thomas Joseph Keane was born in Dublin on 29 December 1982. The tough tackling midfielder started with Preston and with the club was called up to the Irish Under 21 side at the age of 18. Keane made his debut as a substitute for Mark Rankine in the penultimate match in the 2000/01 season as Blackburn won 1-0 at Deepdale on 2 May 2000.

The following season saw him start his first match in a 2-2 draw at Grimsby on 25 August. Two days later he scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw at home to Wimbledon. In total that season Keane scored twice in 20 matches but due to a foot injury in 2002/03 which required a screw being fitted to his broken bone he only made 5 appearances for the Lilywhites. Although he recovered sufficiently to join Grimsby on loan in March 2003.

Keane made 7 appearances for the club, making his debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Wolves on 8 April 2003. He scored in both his final two matches for the club against Reading and Brighton. Unfortunately he could not help them avoid relegation from the Championship when they finished bottom.

Having turned down a move to the mariners he returned to PNE for the 2003/04 season. He made 30 appearances during the season. His last goal for the club came in a 4-2 home victory over Coventry on 16 September 2003, whilst his final appearance came in a 3-3 draw against MK Dons on 10 April.

After 3 goals from 57 appearances Keane joined Hull for £50,000 on 2 June 2004. He scored on debut in a 2-2 draw at home to Wrexham in the League Cup on 24 August. Four days later he scored on his second appearance in a 2-1 win at Barnsley in League One.

Further goals were scored in victories against MK Dons and Sheffield Wednesday in the League and Morecambe in the FA Cup. He lost his place in the team after a 1-0 defeat at Doncaster on 22 January 2005 and didn’t play for the club again, after netting 3 goals from 20 appearances.

On 11 March 2005 Keane joined Championship side Rotherham on loan, making his debut the following day with a 2-1 defeat at Burnley. After a fortnight, the move was made permanent on a free transfer but would stat the new season in League One after relegation at the end of the season.

The 2005/06 season saw Keane make 31 appearances in all competitions but received the red card on three separate occasions.  His only goal for the club cam in a League Cup tie as the Millers lost 4-2 at home to Norwich on 29 September.

Keane made 60 league appearances in all for Rotherham, with his last league appearance coming on 28 April 2007 in a 4-2 home defeat to Cheltenham and subsequent relegation to League Two.

Following his release by Rotherham at the end of the season he returned to Ireland and signed with St Patrick’s Athletic where he remained for one season and played in the UEFA Cup In the 2008/09 season he made only two substitute league appearances and in July 2008, he was released for failing to lose a satisfactory amount of weight. The following month it was ruled the club were wrong to sack him. In December 2008, Dundalk offered him a trial, but he was not offered a contract.
