Unfortunately the full back didn't make a league appearance for the Hornets and joined Hull in July 1984. He made his league debut during the 1984/85 season as the club gained promotion to Division Two at the end of the season. In four years Williams made 91 appearances and 9 goals.

In July 1988 Williams joined Preston and scored on debut in a 3-1 home defeat to Port Vale on 27 August 1988. In October he took over the number two shirt and stayed there for the remainder of the season and totalled 2 goals from 41 appearances. The following season saw Williams make 41 appearances again but with 3 goals.

In 1990/91 season he didn't make another appearance during the season after a 3-1 defeat at Bury on 29 December where he broke his leg.
