Player Profile – David Barber

 

David Eric Barber was born in Wombwell on 6 December 1939.

The wing-half started his career with Barnsley and made his debut for the second division side in a 1-1 draw at home to Cardiff on 10 April 1958. In the next 7 days Barber made a further 2 appearances for the Tykes.

The 1958/59 season Barber played in the 7-4 home defeat to Bristol City on 27 August but didn’t figure in the first team for almost 7 months. Barber made 10 appearances during Barnsley relegation season and was on the losing team on 9 occasions. His first victory was a 3-1 win against Swansea on 20 April.

Barber made 31 league appearances in the Division Three season and scored his first goal in a 3-3 FA Cup draw at home to Bradford on 14 November. He scored two league goals in the space of the month, the first a 2-1 win against QPR at Oakwell on 12 December.

Barber’s final season at Barnsley saw him make the most appearances in one season with 39 league appearances. His two goals came in a space of 9 days in both matches against Colchester. His final match for the club was a 4-2 home victory over Shrewsbury on 3 May 1961; he had netted 4 goals from 83 league matches.

In June 1961 Barber joined Second Division Preston and made his debut in a 4-1 defeat at Luton on 19 August. His first win for the Lilywhites was a 2-1 victory at Leeds on 30 September. Barber made 17 league appearances scoring his first goal in his final match of the season with a2-0 home win over Charlton on 28 April 1962.

Barber made 15 appearances in the 1962/63 season but was on the winning side on 3 occasions. His final goal for PNE came in a 2-2 draw at home to Rotherham on 27 October.

He made his final few appearances for North End in 1963/64; the final match was a 4-2 defeat at Rotherham on 4 April after 37 league appearances and 3 goals.

In 1964 Barber joined South African club Arcadia Shepherds based in Arcadia, Pretoria.

David Barber passed away in 2006.
