Player Profile Tommy Thompson


Thomas (Tommy) 'Topper' Thompson was born in Fencehouses, near Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham on 10 November 1929.


After starting his career with Lumley YMCA, Thompson joined Newcastle in August 1946. He made his debut the following season and in three seasons Thompson scored 6 goals in 20 league appearances.


When manager George Martin left Newcastle he took Thompson with him to Aston Villa with Villa paying £12,500 in August 1950.

Thompson made his Villa debut on 23 September 1950 in a 1-1 draw at Blackpool. Thompson made 33 league and cup appearances during 1950/51, scoring 11 goals.


The 1951/52 season saw Thompson make his England debut against Wales on 20 October 1951 with a 1-1 draw at Ninian Park. Thompson scored 13 goals from 37 appearances in all completions.


After scoring 11 times in 27 appearances during the 1952/53 season he has his most productive season the following season by scoring 21 league and cup goals in 35 appearances. His final season for Villa in 1954/55 Thomson scored 20 goals in 33 appearances. In total Thompson made 149 appearances for Villa, scoring 67 goals and a further 9 goals from 16 FA Cup matches.


In July 1955 Thompson joined Preston for a fee of £28,500 and scored within two minutes of his debut on 20 August 1955 as Preston beat Everton 4-0 at Goodison Park . Thompson also scored in his next 3 matches. Thompson was an ever-present during the 1955/56 season and finished top scorer for PNE in with 23 league goals including. These included two braces in a 3-2 defeat at home to Chelsea and a 4-0 win at Tottenham. His partnership with Tom Finney led to them scoring 42 league and cup goals between them during the season as Preston narrowly avoided relegation from the First Division by one point.


The 1956/57 season saw Preston finish third behind runners-up Tottenham and champions Manchester United. Thompson again finished top sorer with 26 league goals from 38 appearances with a further 3 coming in the FA Cup. Thompson scored twice in a match on 6 separate occasions during the season. Thompson scored two hat-tricks in a space of 4 days. His first senior hat-trick for PNE was in a 6-0 victory against Sunderland on 3 November and scored another hat-trick for an FA XI 7-3 victory against the Army at Maine Road on 7 November. Finney also scored twice in both of those matches.


After a gap of 4½ years Thompson won his second and final England cap on 6 April 1957 as England defeated Scotland 2-1. Even though Thompson and Finney was representing England and Bill Shankly was representing Scotland Preston still won their league fixture on the same day with a 1-0 victory against Wolves.


The 1957/58 season saw PNE finish runners-up to Wolves as they scored 100 goals during the season. Thompson's partnership with Finney netted 60 goals with Thompson contributing 34 of them. This included a hat-trick for PNE in an 8-0 victory against Birmingham on 1 February 1958 with Sammy Taylor also scoring a hat-trick in the same game. Thompson also scored a further 7 braces during the season.


The following season saw Thompson finished top scorer for the fourth successive season with 19 league goals and scored his 100 th league goal on 11 April 1959 in a 4-2 victory against his former club Aston Villa.


Thompson was limited to just 21 league appearances in 1959/60, scoring 12 times. He did score his second hat-trick in a PNE shirt as they lost 5-4 at home to Chelsea on 19 December 1959. But his hat-trick was over-shadowed as a young Jimmy Greaves scored all five goals for Chelsea.


The 1960/61 season saw Thompson only score twice in 13 appearances, both of these was in the 5-2 defeat at West Ham.

His last game was a 1-1 draw against Bolton on 29 April 1961 which is still the last match that Preston played top flight football. Thompson scored 116 goals in 189 league appearances for PNE and 129 goals in 213 appearances if you include cup matches.


In June 1961 Thompson joined Stoke and stayed for just under two seasons. The 1962/63 season saw Stoke win the Second Division Championship. Thompson made 42 league appearances for Stoke, scoring 17 goals.


In March 1963 Thompson finished his playing with Barrow making 44 league appearances and scoring 16 goals in two seasons.


Thompson later returned to Deepdale to coach the Preston side under Bobby Charlton.


Thompson later left Preston to concentrate on his family joinery business.
