Player Profile – Wayne Brown

Wayne Lawrence Brown was born on 20 August 1977 in Barking. Brown started his career as an apprentice at Ipswich, making 40 league appearances for the club and scoring once against Avenir Beggen in the UEFA Cup.

He made his league debut whilst on loan at Colchester when he joined on loan in October 1997. This was a 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury on 18 October. His second and last loan match for the ‘U’s was a 3-3 home draw against Scunthorpe on 31 October. His only other match during the 1997/98 season was his debut for his parent club in a 1-1 draw for Ipswich at Middlesbrough on 17 January 1998.

In March 2001 Brown joined Queens Park Rangers on loan.  In September 2002 Brown joined Wimbledon on loan and scored once against Crewe Alexandra in a 4-0 win at Crewe on his second appearance before leaving the club in December 2002. Brown signed for Watford on loan and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Preston on 31 January 2002 and scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Coventry on 16 March.

In December 2002 Brown joined Watford permanently and scored in a 7-4 win at Burnley on 5 April.   Whilst at Watford he had a loan spell at Gillingham starting in September 2003 for a month, playing four games and scoring once against Walsall with a penalty in a 2-1 defeat at Walsall.

In February 2004 Brown joined Colchester on loan for the second time with his second debut with a 1-1 draw at Southend on 17 February and made 16 league appearances. He was sent off once in a 2-1 defeat at Brighton on 20 March. After a successful loan spell Brown joined Colchester for the 2004/05 campaign and made 40 league appearances scoring once in a 2-2 draw at Wrexham on 22 February. The following season saw Colchester gained promotion to the Championship as League One runners-up, scoring twice in 38 league matches and was voted Colchester United's Player of the Season for 2005/06

He was the only outfield player to play every minute of every game in the Football League Championship in the 2006/07 season. His last match for the ‘U’s was a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on 6 May 2007.

After 142 league appearances in total with four goals Brown signed a three-year contract with Hull City on 14 July 2007 after Colchester agreed to sell him for £450,000. In his first season with Hull, he helped them win promotion to the Premier League with Brown scoring once in the process against former club Ipswich in a 3-1 win on 29 September.

On 30 August 2008, Brown made his Premier League debut for Hull in a 5–0 loss against Wigan. During the game, Brown made a mistake when he allowed Zaki to score the third goal in the match

On 27 October 2008, Brown joined Preston on loan for a month, having been found surplus to requirements at his parent club. He made 6 appearances with his PNE debut coming in a 2-0 home win against Watford on 28 October.

On 30 January 2009, Brown joined Leicester on loan for the rest of the 2008/09 season with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer. He helped the club regain promotion to the Championship as League One champions by beating Southend United 2–0 on 18 April 2009. On 28 April 2009, Brown signed a two-year deal with the club for an undisclosed fee. He went on to make 39 appearances in the 2009/10 season, helping Leicester concede just 45 goals and finish in the Championship playoff places. On 15 May 2010, it was revealed that Brown was under investigation by the club following an alleged training ground bust-up over comments he made regarding over the outcome of the UK General Election.  Brown joked to have voted for the far-right British National Party.

 On 5 July 2010 Brown had a medical at Preston North End. The next day it was revealed that Brown had left Leicester City by mutual consent. He was joined the club along with Craig Morgan and was signed by Darren Ferguson. After Ferguson sacking, former manager Phil Brown came into his life again when he had been manager at Hull during Brown's time there. Brown yet to make his debut for Preston because of he tore a calf muscle during pre-season training. Until on 18 September 2011 when he made his first start and played 90th minutes in a 1-0 loss against Norwich City. Brown get more picked by the manager and made just only 13 appearance for Preston. On 5 February 2011, Brown made his 13th and last appearance for the club in a 4-0 loss against Bristol City. After the end of 2010/11 season, Preston North End released him along with 5 players after been told that he wouldn't be picked by Preston boss Phil Brown.

 

 On 22 October 2011, Brown made his debut for Bury Town in a 1-0 win over Aveley .After suffering an injury, he retired from professional football.
