Player Profile – Karl Hawley

 

Karl Leon Hawley was born on 6 December 1981 in Walsall and started his career for his hometown team. He made his debut in a 2-1 victory over Wigan in the Football League Trophy on 30 January 2001. He only made one substitute league appearance for Walsall, replacing Marcelo on 56 minutes in a 1-1 draw at home to Gillingham on 30 March 2002.

Hawley joined Scottish side Raith on loan on 14 August 2002 and scored the only goal three days later on debut against Dunbarton He stayed until the end of January 2003 netting 7 goals from 17 appearances. Later in the season he had a short loan with Hereford, scoring once against Burtonbefore returning for a second loan with Raith for four months in August 2003 with 2 goals from 9 appearances.

After his release by Walsall in 2004, Hawley joined Hednesford but only made one start for the Pitmen, playing in a league game against Hinckley He was again released towards the end of the 2003/04 season and joined Conference side Carlisle in the summer of 2004.

For Carlisle Hawley scored 7 goals in his first 8 appearances including a hat-trick in a 7-0 win over Farnborough on 28 August 2004. He scored 13 goals helping them ton promotion back to the Football League. He also made 2 appearances for England 'C' between 2004/05.

He was the League Two top scorer in the 2005/06 season, forming a successful partnership with Michael Bridges asCarlisleachieved a second successive promotion to League One. His total of 26 goals in all competitions included two hat-tricks scored in a space of two weeks in October / November, with a 6-0 win against Stockportand a 4-3 victory at Torquay. Hawley was voted League Two Fans' Player of the Year and was part of the League Two Team of the Year.

In May 2007, Hawley was offered an improved contract by Carlislemanager Neil McDonald,but Hawley rejected the offer and left the club on 11 May 2007. In three seasons for Carlislehe scored 47 league goals from 118 appearances.

He signed for Championship side Preston on 14 June 2007, on a three-year contract by former Carlislemanager Paul Simpson.

His debut was a 0-0 draw against Norwichon 11 August and his first league goal came on his sixth appearance in a 5-1 win over Southamptonon 2 October. He scored 3 league goals from 25 appearances, but scored a brace in a 4-1 FA Cup win at Premier League sideDerbyon 26 January 2008.

After making appearances for the Lilywhites in August, the following month saw Hawley join Northamptonon loan for three months, scoring twice in 11 appearances. But his return to Preston saw him make just two appearances in four months. His 30th and last league appearances for Preston came in a 2-1 defeat at CrystalPalace on 7 March.

On 20 March 2009 Hawley joined Colchester on loan, his debut the following day was a 1-1 draw at Leicester. Ater a 3-0 defeat against Scunthorpehe got his only victory for the ‘U’s in a 1-0 win at Millwall. His fourth and last appearances came in a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds on 4 April 2009.

He signed for League Two side NottsCountyon 3 August 2009, on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. His debut came in a 5-0 win overBradfordon 8 August. Up to the end of the 2010/11 season he had made 55 league appearances and netted 3 goals, all of the goals were scored in his first season for the club.
