Player Profile - Peter Zelem

Peter Richard Zelem was born in Manchester on 13 February 1962. Zelem signed on schoolboy forms for Blackpool but was released in 1978 when he joined Chester as an apprentice.

Zelem made his league debut on 23 August 1980 in a 1-0 win at home to Carlisle and mage a further 5 appearances during the 1980/81 season. His first goal came in the opening match of the 1981/82 in a 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers on 29 August. Zelem made a further 30 appearances as Chester finished bottom of Division Three.

A mid table finish saw Zelem net 3 goals from 35 appearances in 1982/83. His most productive season in front of goal came in their re-election season of 1983/84 when he scored 7 times including 3 penalties from 42 appearances.

After scoring 15 goals in 129 appearances Zelem signed for Second Division Wolves for £12,500 in January 1984. This money helped Chester sign Stuart Rimmer for a small fee.

Zelem made 16 appearances for Wolves for the remainder of the 1984/85 season saw them finish bottom and relegation to Division Three. Consecutive relegation occurred in 1985/86 as Wolves dropped to the Fourth Division, with Zelem making 14 appearances.

Zelem made a further 15 appearances in 1986/87 and scored his only league goal for the club from the penalty spot.

In March 1987 Zelem joined Preston after making 45 appearances for Wolves. His PNE debut came in a 2-1 win at home to Burnley on 28 March when he was replaced Frank Worthington. His third appearance saw him score his only goal for the Lilywhites in a 2-0 win at Rochdale on 7 April. Zelem's sixth and last appearances came in the 2-2 draw at Hartlepool on 4 May as Preston gained promotion from the Fourth Division.

August 1987 saw Zelem join Fourth Division Burnley and made his debut in a 3-0 home defeat against Colchester on 15 August. Zelem made 10 appearances, scoring one goal in 1987/88 season and a further 9 appearances and one goal in 188/89. His last appearance came on 14 January 1989 in a 2-1 win at Turf Moor against Halifax.

Zelem left Burnley at the end of the season and joined non-league side Winsford United. In 1991 Zelem joined Ashton United but only made one appearances against Blackpool Rovers on 24 August 1991 as injury forced him to retire from playing.

Away from football he worked as a contract cleaner with his twin brother Alan, who had previously been a goalkeeper with Macclesfield.
