Preston resumed after the mini international break at the start of October knowing that a tough month lay ahead with Sunderland and along trip to Ipswich before matches against rivals Leeds and Burnley to finish off the month.

As Brian O'Neill announced his retirement from the game, Preston breezed passed Sunderland with a good first half performance display. One other noteable absentee was Neil Mellor who did not feature at all throughout the month. Danny Dichio managed to net his first goal in 42 games and the month started with a bang.

Next the long trip to Ipswich looked to be heading for defeat as North End trailed by two goals at half time. A stunning second half performance combined with some mediocre defending from the home side saw North End clinch an important victory with Nugent scoring for the first time since August.

Preston then made hard work of a victory over Hull before they went to Turf Moor in front of the Sky cameras for th elocal derby match. Preston were defeated for only the second time in the league this season after snatching the lead from nowhere they were defeated by two late goals.

Preston bounced back with an impressive win over a poor Leeds side with Dennis Wise in charge. Nugent who was suspended for the derby match ran riot. Preston wer econvincing winners and ended the month in second spot one point ahead of local rivals Burnley and four points behind leaders Cardiff.
