Mad March Review

Preston started the month well with a win in front of the Sky television cameras. A poor first half against Southampton was turned around thanks to Neil Mellor's first goal and a superb finish by David Nugent alongside a good substitute performance from Patrick Agyemang.

All the hard work was undone as Preston put in their worst performance of the season away at the KC Stadium. Nugent went off early with an injury and a lacklustre side failed to get a shot on target as they were outbattled by a struggling Hull side.

Preston turned things around with two successive home wins against Ipswich and local rivals Burnley. This leevated them nearer the top with other results falling kindly for North End but disaster at the end of the month was to prove costly.

An innefective performance in front of the cameras at Elland Road may have been the end of Preston's automatic promotion chances. It was their fourth away defeat in five games to a team stranded at the bottom of the league. Poor defending and woeful finishing cost Preston dear.

North End now have seven games in five weeks with the important fact that four are away from home. If the away form does not improve rapidly then Preston could be struggling to hang on to a play off position with the chasing pack all bunching up on each other.

The high point of the month was that Preston striker David Nugent was called up for the England squad, scoring on his debut against Andorra.
