Player Profile - Ronnie Jepson

Ronald Francis "Ronnie" Jepson was born on 12 May 1963 in Audley, Stoke-on- Trent. He was a relative latecomer to the professional game at 25 after being employed as a miner for six years in Stoke, when he joined Port Vale from Nantwich Town on 23 March 1989 and made two appearances for Vale in the 1988/89 season as they got promoted to the Second Division via the play offs.

After three substitute appearances Jepson joined Peterborough on loan in January 1990, netting 5 goals in 18 appearances before returning to make further two substitute appearances for Vale.

After 15 appearances in 1990/91 season to take his tally to 22 appearances, Jepson joined Preston for £80,000 in February 1991.

Jepson made his PNE debut in a 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield on 16 February. Three days later he became an instant hero by scoring a first half hat-trick in the 6-1 win against Burnley in the Leyland DAF Cup. Unfortunately he could not reach those heights again although he did score a brace in the 3-1 victory against Mansfield in the following month. In total Jepson scored 3 goals from 13 appearances.

The 1991/92 season saw Jepson score 5 goals in 24 appearances including two braces in victories against Hull and Darlington. His last game for the Lilywhites was in the final game of the season in a 2-0 win over Bury when he was substituted for one of the goalscorers Steve Finney.

In his PNE career Jepson had scored 8 goals from 37 league appearances.
Jepson joined Exeter in July 1992 for £60,000 and scored eight goals in his first season.

The 1993/94 season saw Jepson as top scorer for Exeter with 13 goals from 16 appearances even though he left to join Huddersfield for £80,000 in December 1993.

Jepson formed a successful strike partnership with Andy Booth, scoring 45 goals between them, with Jepson scoring 19, helping the side to get promotion via the play offs in 1995. He also earned the nickname Rocket Ronnie whilst at Huddersfield. In total Jepson scored 36 goals from 107 appearances before Stan Ternant paid £80,000 to take him to Bury in August 1996.

Jepson made his debut for the Shakers in a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford on 17 August. Jepson made 31 appearances scoring 9 goals as Bury won the Second Division title.

Jepson made a further 16 appearances before joining Oldham in January 1997. But his stay at Oldham was short making just 9 appearances. His four goals came in the last three appearances culminating in a brace on his final appearance in a 2-0 win at Grimsby.

Jepson rejoined Stan Ternant at Burnley for the 1998/99 season but in his two and a half year career at Burnley he was mainly used as a sub.
Jepson made his debut on 8 August 1998 as a sub for Andy Payton in a 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers and scored his first goal in a 1-0 win against Fulham on 1 May 1999.

The 1999/2000 season saw Jepson his remaining two goals for the Clarets against a former club Bury at Turf Moor and at Gigg Lane. His last game for Burnley came on New Years Day 2001 as a sub for former PNE Player Lenny Johnrose against Wolves before retiring playing on 3 May 2001. In total Jepson made 59 league appearances for Burnley but only started in 4 of them.

Stan Ternent, then appointed him to his first coaching role as reserve coach at the Clarets.

In May 2004, Ternent's contract at Burnley was not renewed by the club and Jepson was let go along with him. In December of the same year, Ternent became manager at Gillingham, and Jepson joined him, again as assistant manager. Although the Gills' fortunes improved, they narrowly failed to escape relegation from the Championship. Ternent left the club during the summer, but Jepson remained, as assistant to new manager Neale Cooper.

The 2005/06 season did not start well for Gillingham, and following a run of bad results and an FA Cup defeat to non-league Burscough, Cooper resigned and Jepson was appointed manager on 15 November 2005, initially on a caretaker basis, but he signed a two year contract within the first two months, although this was not made public until several months later. Jepson turned the season around, and the Gills, having flirted with relegation danger, finally finished in 14th place with 60 points.

During the close season Jepson's assistant Mick Docherty, who had been on a short-term contract, signed a new two-year contract for the role, and Jepson was able to make long term adjustments to the playing squad. However, following a poor start to the 2006-07 campaign, with five defeats from the first six matches, Jepson resigned as manager. His had won 31 of his 86 matches as manager of the Gils with 39 defeats.

In 24 April 2008 Jepson returned to Huddersfield, this time in the capacity of assistant manager to the newly appointed manager Stan Ternent.
