Player Profile – Joe Walton
Joseph Walton was born in Lunes on 8 January 1881, the winger made his Preston debut in a 4-0 home win over Stockport on 29 March 1902. His first goal came in the return fixture on his third appearance with a 2-0 victory on 5 April. Two days later he scored again in a 3-1 home win over Burnley and finished the season with 2 goals from 7 appearances.
The following season Walton made 18 league appearances with his two goals coming in a brace as PNE beat Burnley 5-0 at Deepdale on 18 October 1902. His final Lilywhite match was a 1-0 defeat at Glossop on 4 April 1903.
His next league appearance came five seasons later for Tottenham with a 3-0 home win over Wolves on 1 September 1908. He scored on his third appearances with a 4-0 home win over Barnsley 11 days later. He made a total of 24 appearances with two goals in 1908/09 as Spurs were promoted to Division One, before joining Sheffield United.
His Blades debut was a 2-0 win at Middlesbrough on 1 September 1909, he had to w.it until his 14th appearance before his first goal with a 2-0 home win over Bury on 20 November. He scored a further 3 goals in his next 9 league games to give him his most successful season of his career with 4 goals from 32 matches.
His final league season was in 1910/11 and scored once in 28 matches. His last goal was the only goal in a win at Bradford City on 21 January. His final match was a 1-1 draw at Bury on 29 April. Walton had netted 5 goals in 60 appearances for the Blades.
After leaving Bramall Lane he joined Stalybridge Celtic where he ended his senior career.
