Player Profile Mick Martin

Michael Paul Martin was born in Dublin on 9 July 1951. He was the son of a former Northern Ireland and Eire International Con Martin. Martin's career stated in Ireland with Home Farm and Bohemians and left sport's managers job to join Manchester United in January 1973 for a fee of £25,000. This was a record receipt for a League of Ireland club at the time.

He made his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Everton on 24 January 1973. Prior to his debut United were struggling near the bottom of the table after 26 matches but Martin's played in the remainder of the season keeping them in the top flight. His first goal came in a 2-1 win against Newcastle and scored his second the following month with the only goal against Norwich.

The following season saw United relegated as Martin started the season but was replaced as Docherty tried to find the right formula. Martin returned to the side towards the end of the season as United won 7 of the last 10.

Martin was limited to just 9 appearances in the 1974/75 promotion season and was surplus to requirements. After 40 appearances and 2 goals he joined West Brom in December 1975 for £30,000.

Martin stayed with the Baggies for 3 years making 89 league appearances and scoring 11 goals. Martin helped the club gain promotion in 1976 to the First Division and reached the Semi-Final of the FA Cup in 1978. But this ended in disappointment as Martin was sent-off and West Brom was beaten by the eventual winners Ipswich Town . The departure of Johnny Giles and the arrival of Ron Athinson at West Brom led to a move to the North East.

In November 1978, Martin joined Newcastle for £100,000 making his debut at Crystal Palace on 2 December 1978. Martin made a total of 147 league appearances for Newcastle, scoring 11 goals. Although the 1982/83 season saw Arthur Cox's side promoted to Division One, Martin was discarded.

After a spell in Canada with Vancouver Whitecaps, he returned to Britain non-league Northern League side Willington. In November 1984 Martin returned to the football league with Cardiff City, making 7 appearances.

Two months later Martin joined Peterborough and made 13 appearances. In August 1985 Martin made 5 appearances for Rotherham before joining Preston in September 1985.

Initially on a month's contract Martin made his debut on 28 September in a 2-0 home victory against Hereford. Martin played for three managers that season as Preston finished 91 in the Football League. Martin made 35 league appearances for the club. His only goal for PNE was in the 7-3 FA Cup First Round defeat at Walsall . His last appearance was on the final game of the season in a 4-0 defeat at Aldershot when he was replaced by Nigel Jemson who was making his debut.

Martin made a total of 52 international appearances for Eire, scoring 4 goals, spanning over 11 years. His debut was on 10 October 1971 in a 6-0 defeat against Austria for a European Championship qualifier. His last game was also a European Championship qualifier as Eire lost in Spain 2-0 on 27 April 1983.

Martin retuned to Newcastle as chief scout and assistant coach. During October 1988 he had a short spell as assistant manager to Colin Suggett. In the early 1990's Martin became a coach at Liam Brady's Glasgow Celtic squad.

On leaving the game Martin retuned to the North East to run a sports shop in Swalwell and was a local radio pundit covering the Newcastle matches.
