Preston North End Versus Sheffield Wednesday Match Preview
Coca-Cola Championship Tuesday 16th March 2010
After one former North End gaffer was sent with his tail between his legs on Saturday in Billy Davies, another and more recent former Preston boss is set for a return on Tuesday. Alan Irvine left Deepdale in January after being dismissed but was soon back in a job after south Yorkshire outfit Sheffield Wednesday secured his services.
The Owls are in a very similar predicament to what North End were when Irvine first took charge; bravely fighting against relegation. Currently, Wednesday have their heads above water but only on goal difference. A defeat could see them slump back into the bottom three.
North End, however, are looking up rather than down after Saturday’s win. The 3-2 victory over Forest left North End 9 points above the relegation zone and just 5 away from the playoffs when just a week-or-so ago the playoff dream looked to be all but dead and buried.
Previous Meetings
Back in October, Preston travelled to Hillsborough for the reverse fixture. Goals from Neil Mellor and Jon Parkin sealed a 2-1 win for the Lilywhites. Full-back Michael Gray did equalise for the Owls with a stunning free-kick but the Beast was on hand to fire North End back into the lead.
Sheffield Wednesday’s last visit to Deepdale resulted in a stalemate. 12 months ago, Francis Jeffers put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark after getting on the end of a Sean McAllister cross. Jeffers’ goal looked like it would be enough to seal a valuable away win for the Owls but the enigmatic Yorkshire-man they call the Beast equalised for North End two minutes into injury time to salvage a point.
Team News
Striker Jon Parkin was back in training today (Monday) meaning that North End’s top scorer is likely to play some part on Tuesday. Youl Mawene, however, is set to miss out after limping out of Saturday’s win over Nottingham Forest.
For the visitors, Alan Irvine will have to do without the services of Sean McAllister whilst the midfielder recovers from a stomach injury picked up in training. Francis Jeffers is available for selection.
Eddie Nolan is also available to line up for Sheffield Wednesday against his parent club.
