Player Profile – Colin Murdock

 

Colin James Murdock was  born  on 2 July 1975 in Ballymena and started his career as an apprentice at Manchester United on leaving school in 1991. He featured in the youth side that were FA Youth Cup runners-up in 1993 and turned professional a year later, but never played a first team game for the club and was transferred to Preston for £165,000 in May 1997.

Murdock made his Lilywhite debut in a 0-0 draw at Gillingham on 8 August 1997, his first goal came on his fourth league appearance scoring an 84th minute winner with a 2-1 win over Brentford on 4 October and made 27 league appearances during the season.

His next goal came in the 1998/99 season with a 2-2 draw at Wigan on 13 April 1999 and 33 appearances in total. The 1999/2000 season saw Murdock make a further 33 appearance as PNE Won the Second Division title under David Moyes. His two goals were at Deepdale in victories over Stoke & Wycombe.

Murdock made his 100th league appearance for North End on 16 September 2000 in a 1-1 draw at home to Stock. Murdock received a red card in a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest as PNE were reduced to 9 men. PNE finished fourth and made 37 league appearances and featured in the side that reached the Division One playoff final in 2001 losing 3–0 to Bolton Wanderers on 28 May 2001.

The 2001/02 saw Murdock score in consecutive matches in a 1-1 draw at home to Walsall on 18 August and in a 2-2 draw a week later at Grimsby. His final match was a 1-1 home draw against Nottingham Forest on 25 January 2003 In total Murdock netted 6 goals in 177 matches.

Murdock joined Scottish club Hibernian in 2003. This gave him the long-awaited chance to experience top division football. During his time at Easter Road, he scored the winning goal in a penalty shootout against Rangers in a CIS Cup semi-final. He  joined Championship side Crewe on 31 January 2005 and made 16 appearances and skippered the team and his form helped to steer them clear of relegation.

On 1 August 2005, Murdock signed for Rotherham, where he captained the team and brought experience to the centre of the Rotherham defence. His debut was a 2-1 defeat at home to Walsall on 6 August His first goal for Rotherham came in a 4-2 defeat against Southend on 24 September.  Murdock was red carded in a 1-1 draw at Barnsley on 19 November His second and final goal for Rotherham came in a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City on 28 December. He made 43 league appearances in two seasons, scoring twice. At the end of the 2006–07 season after a season blighted by injuries he left Rotherham his last match for the club came in a 2-0 defeat at Cheltenham on 16 December 2007. Following a brief trial period he signed a one-year contract with Shrewsbury. He made 29 league appearances and scored two goals for the Shrews, but was released by new manager and former PNE manager Paul Simpson on 29 April 2008.

 

On 16 May 2008, Murdock signed a one-year deal with Accrington Stanley.[He scored his first and only goal for Accrington in a 2-1 defeat to Barnet on 4 October 2008. His last match was a 1-0 defeat at home to Chester on 13 April 2009.

 

At the end of season 2008/09 Murdock retired from professional football after 17 years and 417 appearances to commence a new career as a sports lawyer.

Murdock earned 34 caps for Northern Ireland. He scored one goal, a powerful header, in a 3–3 draw against Austria in 2004.

He is currently a trainee solicitor at Manchester law firm George Davies LLP. He also is a member of The Football Association's Football Judicial Panel.
