Preston North End Vs Morecambe

Carling Cup First Round Tuesday 11th August 2009

After dramatically coming back from two goals down on Saturday against Bristol City, North End face a very different challenge on Tuesday night in Sammy McIlroy’s Morecambe.  Preston’s first round meeting in 2009 see’s a repeat of that in 2007 but North End fans will not be wanting a repeat of that night when Morecambe displaced, what was then, Paul Simpson’s side.

Morecambe also kicked off their season with a 2-2 draw meaning that, like North End, they are looking for the first win of the season.

Previous Meetings

Of course North End fans won’t need reminding of the last time these two sides met. Tuesday 24th August 2007 was the night which saw North End crash out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle. Morecambe took the lead inside 6 minutes when Jim Bentley scored in spectacular fashion after the centre-half got on the end of a Craig Stanley cross.

On 73 minutes Danny Pugh equalised with a header but with just 6 minutes left, Morecambe scored the winner. An error from Wayne Henderson gifted the ball to Artell who converted into an empty net.
