Preston North End Vs Plymouth Argyle

Coca-Cola Championship Tuesday 3rd February 2009

Paul Sturrock's Plymouth make a Pilgrimage from PL2 to PR2, well PR1 strictly speaking, to take on North End this Tuesday night looking for their first win in six matches. The Plymouth gaffer will be hoping that his side's 608 miles round trip is not a wasted journey. Preston however have not lost to an English club in the league on a Tuesday night since February 2001 meaning that a win for the Pilgrims will not be easy.

Despite the threadbare squad of just 16, Preston will be looking to get back to winning ways as soon as possible after going two games without a win. Tuesday's heavy defeat to Swansea and the 0-0 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday has seen North End slip one place to 6th and given themselves just a two point cushion over the 7th placed QPR. A win for the Lilywhites would get their promotion bid back on track whilst a win for Plymouth could see them jump two places to 14th should results elsewhere go their way.

Previous Meetings

Preston will be out to seek revenge after wasting their extensive journey down to Plymouth in October with a 1-0 defeat. A goal from Rory Fallon in the 18th minute proved to be enough to send the Lilywhites back up North without a point for their endeavours which ironically also came on a Tuesday night.

Last season's trip to Home Park was the game that sealed Preston's Championship status. Goals from Neil Mellor and Richard Chaplow brought North End level to earn themselves that all important 55th point.

When Plymouth last visited Deepdale, back in October 2007, goals from Brett Ormerod and Darren Carter were enough to give Preston the points in what was Paul McKenna's first game back since that February.

Team News

With no new injury news concerning the players that missed out on Saturday, a similar side is expected to continue for North End on Tuesday night. Callum Davidson and Ross Wallace are not likely to be fit in time with Eddie Nolan and Chris Sedgwick ready to step in once again.

Former Lilywhite Paul Gallagher will miss out after picking up a hamstring injury whilst Manchester United starlet David Gray will also not feature.
