“There was no contact at all”

Injustice was the word that would spring into Gould’s mind after that awful red card decision, a decision that made the Whites tumble to second bottom of the league. That is their worst start for 13 years!

But the score line didn’t do any justice for North End, who should have got something from the game, even with 10 men.

‘Keeper Gould got sent off on 40 minutes after the referee claimed he brought Lee Hughes down in the box. But even Hughes said there was no contact.

Gould said: "I think the majority of people in the ground probably realised it wasn’t a penalty from my reaction.

"If I had caught him I don’t think I would have had a complaint.

"But I think that was probably the reason I got so angry about it and confronted the referee with the way I felt.

"I have been sent off twice before in circumstances like that and on both occasions I held my hands up. I didn’t think I had reason to argue. But this one I do.

" I am not going to critisise a fellow professional. I just hope that in the end, the right decision is made in retrospect.

"Hopefully the club will have a chat with the FA and get the referee to look at the incident again on video."
