Across The Pond

Although the English game is now in it’s embryonic stages of pre-season, the MLS is in full swing. David Beckham is now back in Los Angeles meaning that it makes perfect sense to catch up on the goings on across the pond.

First of all we shall look at the stats since our last update.

Brian McBride and the Chicago Fire currently top the Eastern Standings but only on goal difference as Toronto FC, with Danny Dichio, are breathing down their necks on the same points. McBride has been in fine form for his hometown club and has played in 15 games contributing 6 goals and 1 assist.

Fire’s most recent game was a 0-0 draw against McBride’s old club Columbus Crew on Saturday 11th July. Up next for Chicago is a trip to New England.

Whilst David Beckham has been out on loan to Milan, Eddie Lewis has been doing everything he could to make up for the departure of the former Real Madrid man. The former North End and Leeds winger has made 14 appearances but could only muster 1 goal and 2 assists in those games. As a result, LA find themselves 5th in the Western Standings and 7 points behind table toppers Houston, who clearly do not have a problem!

LA’s last game was a 1-0 win over Chivas USA but up next for Galaxy is a trip to New York to take on the Red Bulls on Saturday.

Striker Danny Dichio hasn’t been in prolific form either so far having only been able to score 3 goals in the 15 games he has featured in for Toronto. However, it seems that Dichio has been able to contribute in other ways as, as mentioned above, Toronto find themselves joint top of the Eastern Standings with Brian McBride’s Chicago Fire.

The Reds’ last game was a comprehensive 3-1 over San Jose Earthquakes but will have to be on top their game if they are to displace the Dynamo from Houston who they welcome in their next game.
