Championship Newcomers

As a result, North End found out which teams they will be playing next season.

The headline of the day though is undoubtedly that Newcastle United were relegated to the Championship after a sixteen year stay in the top flight. Alan Shearer led the Magpies out at Villa Park for a game which proved to be their last in the Premier League, for a season at least.

Despite early chances from Obafemi Martins, and a handful of opportunities for Shola Ameobi late on, the Geordies were unable to respond to a Damien Duff own goal who directed a Gareth Barry shot passed his own keeper. Michael Owen made a second-half substitute appearance but was unable to save his side from relegation in what is surely his last game for Newcastle United.

It could be argued that Middlesbrough were already as good as relegated going into their last game of the season against West Ham but the 2-1 defeat at Upton Park confirmed it. West Brom made a quick return after only managing one season back in the top flight but managed to end the season without a defeat thanks to a 0-0 draw with Blackburn at Ewood Park.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Mike Adkins' Scunthorpe United sealed promotion back from League One at the first attempt thanks to a late winner from Martyn Woolford. Despite Matthew Sparrow putting the Irons ahead early on, United found themselves 2-1 down thanks to a Gary Alexander brace. However, Sparrow completed a brace of his own before Woolford sealed promotion with just five minutes to spare.

Whether North End will face Burnley or Sheffield United next season is still unknown as both sides go head-to-head in the Championship Play-Off Final tomorrow afternoon.
