Waterford 0-3 Ipswich Town

Ipswich began their mini tour of Ireland with a comprehensive win over Waterford Town on Friday night. Former Charlton striker Kevin Lisbie’s first-half goal saw the Tractor Boys hold a one goal lead at the break before Owen Garvan bagged a brace to complete the scoring.

Elsewhere for the Suffolk club, a young Ipswich XI were sent to Hadleigh hoping of a repeat of the 8-0 thrashing they handed out to Gorleston in their previous outing. Unfortunately, only four goals separated the two sides with Ed Upson getting on the score sheet again.

Cheltenham Town 1-1 Bristol City

Bird 65, Clarkson 74

First of all, Bristol City travelled to Whaddon Road to take on Cheltenham Town. It was the home side who drew first blood when they took the lead with a stunning free kick on 65 minutes. Bird beat Brezovan, the City goalkeeper, with a curling set-piece which dipped over the wall and into the top corner from 25 yards out. New boy David Clarkson salvaged a draw for his new side by netting his first in Bristol City colours in emphatic fashion; hammering the ball past Brown between the sticks for Cheltenham.

So far City have won one, drawn one and lost one after a win over Hereford United and a heavy 4-0 defeat to Ajax on Wednesday.

Hinckley United 0-2 Coventry City

Best 25, Eastwood 85

The Sky Blues recorded their second victory in a row of pre-season with a 2-0 win over Hinckley Town. Leon Best put the visitors ahead after finishing off a throw-in from Gunnarsson who’s ball in cannoned off two players before landing to Best who slotted home from the six-yard line. A one goal lead lasted for 60 minutes of play until former Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood sealed the win with a close-range header.

Chesterfield 2-1 Derby County

The Rams suffered a shock defeat to of League Two Chesterfield despite taking the lead in the first-half. Midfielder Paul Green had Nigel Clough’s side 1-0 up inside the first 16 minutes with a superb strike into the right hand corner from the edge of the area. However, despite the positive start, Derby conceded an equaliser early in the second-half from Scott Bowden who came off the bench to convert a close range effort from a ball in from the left. Former Coventry City defender Robert Page, an unlikely source for goals, netted the winner late on with a header from a corner.

Barrow 0-2 Doncaster Rovers

Sean O’Driscoll’s Doncaster Rovers left Cumbria on Saturday afternoon with a comfortable 2-0 win over Barrow. Lewis Guy got himself on the score sheet again by following up a rebounded Paul Heffernan strike to tap in from close range to give the South Yorkshire outfit the lead. Rovers then doubled their lead immediately after the restart through Clark who smashed the ball in the roof of the net from Hayter ball in.

Darlington 2-7 Newcastle United

Championship newcomers Newcastle United partook in a 9 goal thriller with the Magpies bagging 7 of them. Damien Duff netted the first as soon as the 3rd minute after beating the offside trap from a Ryan Taylor speculative ball downfield.  Duff drilled it past Woodhead from 12 yards out.

Almost as soon as Newcastle had the lead they lost it. Just four minutes later, Mark Convery was tripped in the box by Tamas Kadar giving former Hull striker Dean Windass his chance from the penalty spot. Windass’ spot kick found the top corner to bring the score back level.

Newcastle had the lead again through midfielder Kevin Nolan who side-footed in on the penalty spot after he received the ball from the once exiled Joey Barton. Ameobi added a third on 27 minutes before getting his second just 9 minutes later to put the Magpies out of sight. Jonas Gutierrez, made it 5 before Steven Taylor made it 6 just before the hour mark. Dean Windass added his second of the game before former North End striker Andy Carroll completed the scoring on 75 minutes.
