Burton Albion 1-4 Nottingham Forest

Fresh from their 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in their first pre-season outing, Paul McKenna’s new club Nottingham Forest comprehensively beat Burton Albion 4-1 at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

David McGoldrick began life at the City Ground with a scoring start after netting his first for Billy Davies’ side during the win over Albion. Just shy of the half hour mark the former Southampton striker put the visitors ahead to give The Reds a slender lead going into the break. A second half hat-trick from Nathan Tyson completed the scoring for Forest before Shroot grabbed a late consolation goal for Albion.

Peterborough United 0-3 Aston Villa

Weimann 25, Davies 50, Sidwell 71

Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United were powerless to thwart a confident looking Aston Villa in their tracks on Saturday afternoon. The Premier League showed their class by comfortably beating the Championship newcomers 3-0 with goals from Andreas Weimann, Curtis Davies and Steve Sidwell.

Villa’s opener came from Weimann who powered a close range header on 25 minutes past goalkeeper James McKeown. The score stayed that way at half-time but just five minutes after the re-start, defender Curtis Davies came up from the back to slot home from close-range after exchanging passes with Marlon Harewood. Villa wrapped up the scoring in the 71st minute through former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell.

Skelmersdale United 0-2 Plymouth Argyle

Fallon 18, Paterson 79

Plymouth Argyle took a trip to Lancashire to take on Skelmersdale United on Saturday afternoon. Striker Rory Fallon had the Devonshire side ahead in the 18th minute before Jim Paterson sealed the win with a low drive in the last 11 minutes.

Kettering Town 2-1 Reading

Despite taking the lead as early as the 11th minute, Reading suffered a shock defeat to Conference side Kettering Town. New recruit Simon Church got on the end of a Jimmy Kebe cross to convert from close range to see the Berkshire outfit get off to a good start. However, just after the hour mark, Jean-Paul Marna levelled the score from the penalty spot before grabbing a winner in the 89th minute to send the Royals back to Berkshire with their tails between their legs.

Swansea City 3-1 FC Twente

Paulo Sousa began his Swansea career with an impressive win over Champions League qualifiers FC Twente on Saturday. Steve McClaren’s side were held to 0-0 at half-time but within twelve minutes of the re-start, the former England manager’s side found themselves 1-0 down via a Pintado goal who intercepted a misplaced pass and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. The lead didn’t last long though as Rukavytsya brought the side’s level only to see an immediate reply from 18-year-old Thomas. Pintado netted his second from the penalty spot to wrap-up the scoring.

Hampton and Richmond 1-1 Watford

The Hornets came from behind to salvage a draw against Hampton and Richmond. Former Hornet Collins put the home side ahead with a stunning free-kick just shy of the half hour mark to send the Conference South side in with a 1-0 lead. However, Lewis Young managed to salvage a draw in the 78th minute after getting on the end of a ball in from Piero Mingoia.

Watford’s only other pre-season game to report on was a 3-0 win over Wealdstone thanks to goals from Danny Graham, Tamas Priskin and Nathan Ellington.

NK Varteks 2-2 West Bromwich Albion

The Baggies were twice pegged back after taking the lead against Slovenian side NK Varteks. Former Lilywhite Craig Beattie bagged a brace either side strikes from Lesjak and Mumlek for the home side.

One more match to catch up on was Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town who suffered a 2-0 defeat to Keane’s hometown club Cork City.
