Devine Intervention Cannot Stop The Rot

Preston's winless run continued onto five but they did manage a draw to stop their run of four straight defeats. Phil Brown changed his defence in a rotation policy that would leave Rafa Benitez dazzled as Maclean was dropped and replaced by Gray at right back.

The first half an hour was fairly even with both teams not really testing the others defence until the game exploded into life. Brown had reverted to a 4-4-2 with Mayor and Coutts on the wing who both proved invaluable with a return for the forgotten man Daryl Russell who put in a decent shift.

Mayor cut in from the left to put in an inch perfect cross for Tsoumou to head home for his second in two games. The striker made a good headed finish but the cross made it look so wasy.

Within moments Preston had doubled their lead and looked to be crusising. Coutts jinked down the right before putting a delightful ball into the box from the right evading the Oldham defence with Proctor stabbing home.

We all know Preston can't defend. Even if Brown had played nine at the back with one up front the odds are that Preston would concede and so it proved again.

The first Oldham goal looked suspiciously offised with Kuqi evading all defenders but seemingly a couple of yards behind them all as well. The flag stayed down and he converted past Turner.

Before the break the game was level as an Oldham free kick was fired into the box. Wesolowski was free in the box and diverted the header past Turner. It was unclear if he knew anything about it as the ball appeared to hit him more than anything else.

The heavens opened at half time and the second half proved a messy affair with both teams slipping and sliding across a very greasy turf. It made for a very amusing and interesting second period.

Preston re-took the lead in bizarre fashion. Oldham cleared a corner towards Danny Devine on the half way line who had stayed back and had no one to mark. He attempted to cross the ball back in the box but completely shinned the ball which ballooned up about 100 ft in the air. Everyone left the box bar Proctor who attempted to stick his head on the ball. He slipped, failed to connect, the ball bounced and the keper then slipped allowing the ball to bounce over his head and into the net.

The Oldham players claimed Proctor had fouled the keeper but I think most of it was to hise the keeper's embarrassment at a ball that he should have easily claimed.

Oldham shouldn't have worried as they soon tested Turner who made a fine save before Wesolowski was allowed to roam free without any pressure and shot home with a fine curling shot to beat Turner.

The only surprise is that it finished at 3-3 with Preston still showing quality going forward but equally inept at the back. If the Whites could keep clean sheets then they would be leading this division by a signifcant margin by now.
